Whether it was meant as a prank or to signal something more sinister, the grisly gift of two severed goats' heads left outside a Chilliwack high school has spooked staff and students, and put police on alert.
The animal heads were found two weeks ago. The first was left on a concrete bench near the front entrance to Sardis Senior Secondary School. Four days later, another head was found on a pole near the school's smoke pit.
Rumours soon spread that the heads were left as a sign by a cult who planned some kind of violent act targeting the school, but police say it is more likely a tasteless hoax. Nevertheless, officers have been patrolling the school, watching for signs of trouble.
Police presence and reassuring words haven't been enough to calm some rattled parents, who picked their children up from school early or just kept them at home. Other frightened students cut classes.
School staff have downplayed the rumours that the heads presage a bomb threat or shooting. Officials have said the heads were likely left by a small group of older kids, former students, seeking to cause trouble.
Global BC reported Thursday that the heads may have been stolen from a nearby meat processing plant by an employee who has since been fired.
