    Hurricane Francis

Why is it that when there is such a terrible disaster such as this - families are told to leave their loved ones because there is no place for them in the shelter, & they will not accept you or your pets! I also heard that the animal shelters were closed and not letting you put your pets up either. I live in a state where we deal with tornandoes every summer, but we usually have our own shelters. I couldn't even imagine not taking or staying with my puddies! What is a pet owner suppose to do? All my prayers & love go out to all in that area. GOD BLESS!

Some pet friendly shelters available here in FL. Imade a note of them, just in case. But, I'd rather, hunker down here in Orlando, with the cats, than take them to a shelter, where they'd be traumtized for sure.

So far, we've gotten lucky twice. Now please spare a few prayers for Ivan not to come to FL.

I said the very same thing to my husband last night. He said that if there was a hurricane warning and we were told to evacuate we would take the animals and head far out of town to family in another state, etc. We wouldn't wait til the last minutes and run to the local overcrowded Red Cross location and leave the cats and Nicki behind.

I know that sounds good in theory, because sometimes storms change and hurricanes hit unintended paths, but at least we'd make some effort to take the monsters with us. There's no way i'd elave the house with the pets behind. My roof could blow off and I'd still be there because my kids were there.

Well, now we got Ivan to deal with here on the gulf coast. If it comes to Louisiana, I will go to my daughters house and my babies go with me...I would not consider going ANYWHERE and leaving them here.

If it goes to Florida, panhandle, it gets my sister and they are having to leave and taking their pets with them... She is like me, leaving them behind is not even in the picture.

I don't understand how anyone could leave them behind.

On the same topic - disasters and pets- does anyone know if Terri Crisp still has her disaster rescue (it is National - or was)- "called EARS. United Animal Nations' Emergency Animal Rescue Service, a nationwide disaster program that save shousand of animals." Her book that I have is called Out of Harms Way. And there was a 2nd book too. The appendix gives great advice for preparing various animals for disasters (horses, birds, you name it) the book inspired me to want to join the team but you have to be able to go to a disaster right away (there is a weekend training involved - it's not like they throw you in). I love the book- who knew? I never thought about dogs left in floods and etc because the news never shows these things. She does (did?) remarkable work. So, back to question, does anyone know if the organization is still operating?

My good friend Cheryl in the Humane Society is a member of EARS and she's trying to get me into it also. Cheryl is currently waiting to get the phone call to leave for Florida. EARS is a wonderful organization and they helped alot of animals last summer in the Interior of BC.

OH WHAT GOOD NEWS! THEY HAVEN'T BEEN TO FL YET THOUGH? Is Terri Crisp still involved can you ask your friend at some point. It is a huge commitment right? Are you seriously considering joining? I imagine there would be much heartbreak and much rewarding work. (The chapter that bothered me the most was about ducks with oil all over them, but am so glad that someone washes them in Dawn!). Can you let us know what this org. is doing in FL somehow? I am so glad I posed the question. I've had the book for probably close to 10 years and had no idea if the org was still around! Why the F don't the news stations mention them when they are doing their work? Are they out of the US more than IN the US?
