"Oh, she did well for herself..."

This is sort of a rant I suppose.

Apparently, my highschool volleyball coach married the owner of some wine business. (I believe it was Mondovi, but I'm probably the only person that didn't pay close enough attention to that detail.)

Well, all night long at the wedding I heard "Oh, she did so well for herself..." That is such a tacky statement. Is marrying a billionaire "doing well"? Why don't we say someone has done well when they've simply lead a good life? Why do people always have to say that? Of course, she is a wonderful person and it's always nice to have money, so I am very happy for her. But why is it that whenever someone strikes it rich, people have to make a point of saying "Oh, he or she has done well..." Tacky!

*edit* Called my friend, it is Jay Indelicato that she married from Delicato winery.

I agree that is pretty tacky. Although I guess nabbing rich men is concidered a talent to some people...

The last time I went to a wedding all I heard was:

"And when will your time come?" "I do wish you would meet a nice man and settle down. You've got such a pretty face!"

After that I made my way to the bar and ordered another drink.
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, champagne in one hand and strawberries in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming WOO HOO - What a Ride!

Ugh. Thats as tacky as "What does she see in him?" or "hmph, she could do better." What makes people think they can determine how/what makes someone happy?

As for her doing well, are they with her when the doors close at night, and see how their relationship is? Is he a workaholic? Sounds like you'd need to be in order to make that kind of fortune! I mean, is he always at the office, and even when he's not, is the cell phone permanently atttahced ot his ear? How "good" did she do then? I'd say "done good" happens when you meet someone who gives you what you need emotionally instead of monetarily.

I'm glad I'm poor with a hubby who's here all the time instead of someone who wealthy and home alone.

I have to add another story that pertains to this type of thing....I have heard on more then one occasion on how an old acquaintance of mine has "done well for herself...she owns a big house, Mercedes, etc..."

Well, small world, my realtor is dating her...so I asked him how she is doing...

He tells me that she was in a horrible accident and is in constant pain and has had numerous surguries. She got a large settlement for it, but she'd give all the money back to be normal again. She has had to have her face reconstructed, but she's got lots of money, so THAT is "doing well for herself"?!

sort of reminds me of a commercial where you see this man in an upscale neighborhood with the yard, the pool, the nice cars -

and he says to the camera - "How can I afford all this? I'm in debt up to my eyeballs!".

    Catland,
Your post reminded me of one of my all time favorite songs....
I guess you may say it's from the male point of view!

Talking Heads Lyrics: Once in a Lifetime.

And you may find yourself living in a shotgun shack
And you may find yourself in another part of the world
And you may find yourself behind the wheel of a large automobile
And you may find yourself in a beautiful house, with a beautiful
    wife
And you may ask yourself-Well...How did I get here?

    --------------------------------------------

    And you may ask yourself
    How do I work this?
    And you may ask yourself
    Where is that large automobile?
    And you may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful house!
    And you may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful wife!
    ----------------------------------------------

    And you may ask yourself
    What is that beautiful house?
    And you may ask yourself
    Where does that highway go?
    And you may ask yourself
    Am I right?...Am I wrong?
    And you may tell yourself
    MY GOD!...WHAT HAVE I DONE?
The secret of life is nothing at all

Hey you, don't tell me there's no hope at all -
    Together we stand
    Divided we fall.

I did the right thing by setting you free
But the pain is very deep.
If only I could turn back time, forever, you I'd keep.
    I miss you

I hear you whimper in your sleep
I gently pet you and say, no bad dreams
It will be alright, to my dog as dark as night.

Fur as dark as the night.
    Join me on this flight.
Paws of love that follow me.
In my heart you'll forever be.

How I wish I could hold you near.
Turn back time to make it so.
Hug you close and never let go.

I kind of like the Joe Walsh take on this... - "Life's been good to me so far"

I have a mansion forget the price
Ain't never been there they tell me it's nice
I live in hotels tear out the walls
I have accountants pay for it all

They say I'm crazy but I have a good time
I'm just looking for clues at the scene of the crime
Life's been good to me so far

    My Maserati does 185
I lost my license now I don't drive
I have a limo ride in the back
I lock the doors in case I'm attacked

I'm making records my fans they can't wait
They write me letters tell me I'm great
So I got me an office gold records on the wall
Just leave a message maybe I'll call

Lucky I'm sane after all I've been through
Everybody says I'm cool (He's cool)
I can't complain but sometimes I still do
Life's been good to me so far

I go to parties sSometimes until four
It's hard to leave when you can't find the door
It's tough to handle this fortune and fame
    Everybody's so different, I haven't changed

They say I'm lazy but it takes all my time
Everybody says oh yeah (Oh yeah)
I keep on going guess I'll never know why
Life's been good to me so far

    Same as it ever was???

And I'll be doing Joe Walsh on the way home...

    Tonya,
Sorry for putting your thread to music.....

This nugget came out of my mom's realm of reality.

She was watching a program where a couple was going to get married. The ring was 15,000 dollars and the wedding cost about 20,000 dollars.

I stopped in to see how she was doing and asked her about the program....she explained that the whole wedding cost about 35,000 dollars.

She looked a little hurt and said, "What a waste of money, they could have put the 20 gs down on a house. And WHAT would happen if they ran into financial problems down the road?? You can't eat diamonds..."

I guess you COULD sell the ring to get some grub....But I understood what she was hinting at.......

Darn you, Richard! I've had this song stuck in my head for days, and I just now remembered why.
