Need some help with Buddy..

We went and picked up Buddy and he made the 12 hour trip to my house. We sadated him and he did pretty good. But now he is doing HORRIBLE. He is coming off of his sadation I think. His 3rd eye lid is still out and he seems a little disorented, but what is really worrying me is he is walking around hissing at EVERYTHING, the bed, the chair, his food dish etc. etc.! He is growling none stop, even when he eats (he took a couple bites) He also is making weird noises, like he is "sneezing".

My other concern is that he doesn't like Sada (our foster cat), they met breifly and Buddy tried to beat her up. I know there will be fighting but anything I can do to ease him into living with 3 other cats? I feel so bad for him!!!

This is how we slept every night. He would curl up by the dog and I would cover him up and he would be there in the morning


He loves this dog! (It smells like his old house so I gave it to him to cuddle up to tonight)

What a cutie. Orange cats are the best, I love them.
When we add a new cat to our gang we keep him in the bathroom for a day or so and let him get used to being in a new place. It's scary to be away from the home you've always known. The small space of the bathroom helps him to be less overwhelmed. We will go in to check on him and spend time letting him know that it's ok. The other cats also "visit" him under the door. They peek under the door and sniff each other. Then when he does come out there is still some hissing but it seems to be a little easier on him.

This is what has worked for me, I hope it'll work for you.

He might just need a bit,of time! Imagine if someone,took you,out of the home that yoiu were living in,and put you into a Strange House,with Strange People!

Oh no I think sedation is what's making him hiss. He's probably very disoriented and confused and nothing is what it seems, and being slightly drugged increases that effect. I'm sure he's just very scared. Poor Buddy and poor you - how stressed you must be . But I think all will be ok once the drugs wear off. Well think about it, if you were at home minding your own business and then someone sedated you and when you started coming around you realized you were in a totally strange place that smelled like other animals wouldn't you be scared and grumpy too?

Did you bring things of his with him that would smell familiar like a bed or blanket. I'd keep him in a room with his things until he settled down and definitely go slow in introducing him to Sada and any other animals. Try your best to make this a positive experience for him - so far it's just been strange and scary.

Give him time and try to give him lots of extra attention.

I don't know about cats - but I've certainly seen people behave like that coming off of sedation!!! Sometimes they just go nuts.

I remember one guy, a few days after open heart surgery, while he still had chest tubes in and everything. He took off running to the elevator and when we went to help him get into his wheelchair he started screaming "RAPE! RAPE!"

So - give her time! If cats are anything like people, you might want to make provisions to keep the rest of your animals safe until she's back to her normal self.

Yes, he has a towel and a bed spread that are from his old house and a toy.

He is in the spare bedroom right now and has been since he got here. I wanted him to come out of sedation in a comfortable place and he seems to like it in there with all his stuff.

Well, I've never sedated a cat before, and we had to give him 2 pills when we should have only given him 1 (He woke up completly in the middle of the trip and was yowling for a half hour straight) so I was worried maybe that he was showing signs of OD (not even sure if you can with these pills)

Ash - it does sound like he was overdosed a bit. If he keeps acting strange you probably should take him to the vet to be on the safe side. Poor little guy, I'd say from the trauma he's been through it may take quite a bit of time to get him settled. Best of luck and keep us posted please.

I'm thinking it's the sedation also. Once it's cleared out of his system, he should get back to his happy self.

When my husband had surgery, he awoke from the anesthesia laughing and joking. The nurses said that his reaction to the medicine was great because some people wake up yelling and screaming and they also said they had learned to be very fast on their feet because some patients wake up swinging fists in every direction! Maybe kitties have similar reactions ??

Yeah, not to worry you, but I read it's not recommended to sedate cats, and since you gave him 2 pills, he's probably really reacting to trying to come out of it. I agree with Jazzcat, maybe take him to the vet just to make sure.

Acctually, buddy is 100% back to his sweet old self. He is loveing his head rubs and kisses, laying right next to you or on your lap and he swats at you when you play "Get the Flying Mouse" He is active, eating, drinking, pooping and peeing. He is chesing the bugs in the window and watching the birds outside. He is my sweet old lovable Buddy Poo Bear.

Poor Buddy! He has been through a major life change, and the nasty sedative is probably making him really disoriented! Please allow him some quiet time in a secluded space, with some of his familiar things. If he doesn't start acting right soon, go to the vet!

Why isn't is recommended to sedate them? I think I did the right thing though. He was cramped in a cat carrier for 12 hours and with people he hardly knew. The only comforts of home he had was a towel in his carrier. With the sedative I don't think he minded the trip as much as he would have, it also saved our ears from having to hear his crys the whole trip.
