Borrowing Moosmom's mantra..I'm sick and tired of irresponsible people!

It has been one of 'those' weeks. I get home from work to at least 2-3 calls a day re: cats. I just got in 2 nights ago and hear someone talking on the answering machine. This woman who I've known for too long just came back from the market, and tells me there's a cat under a car in the middle of the parking lot. Off I go (2 minute drive) locate cat who is traumatized to say the least. Pop the catfood can open, lure her out, get the neck scruff and plunk her into the tiny kitten carrier I had in the car. Filthy DMH tabby & white girl that had kittens at some point. I had no place to stick her except the bathroom for the night. It looked like a gas station bathroom in no time flat, dirt everywhere. Sweet kitty though, and thankfully wasn't filled with milk in the A.M! She was settled into a cage downstairs until room opens up at the shelter. (As if lately ). Same day I get a call from 'Paul' who adopted two kitties from me a while back. His neighbor "just looooves her 2 kittens, and hates to throw them out but....GRRR! So I've been on the phone doing the run around trying to find placement for the two kittens. In the meantime Paul (I'm going to set him straight on this one) gives the woman my home #! And other's home #S! A spot opened up in a shelter 35-45 minutes from me, so I had to drop everything and drive these two up there rather than take the chance of finding them smooshed on the street. Another 'thorn in my side' has been badgering me about a cat on her street who is owned but not well cared for. Ruth has been given the OK to make the 2 minute drive w/the cat to the animal hospital, and another shelter will pick her up after she's had her medical work done. No... Ruth wants ME to take time out of my busy life and take the cat to the shelter I deal with. Lazy S.O.S! Ruth so convienently found six sick kittens a week ago, the day after I told her I have NO ROOM! I will never turn away any kittens, but it really p**ssed me off that she couldn't contribute to the round the clock care these babies needed. One tube of eye ointment x 12 eyes two times a day=a tube a day practically! And vets aren't cheap. The kittens are improving every day, but I feel so used by the entire community lately. I've been threatening to disconnect the phone and move to a remote island..but there aren't any. So my next choice is a Bridge Party! Jump off that nice tall bridge not far from here and be done with it all. I have friends coming with me lol! Not cats...humans also sick of all the B.S in this city. *sigh* My balls and chains won't let me though. I need some cheering up lately, and a break from all this crap. Jan

You just unload here all you want!!!! It is an endless battle, and one that will most likely never be won ... but those of us who try will find the strength to keep going on. Just vent and pick up and keep going!!!

QSAL: Us "Pet Listeners" are here for you. Vent all you want. We're all filled with admiration for your dedication and endurance.

Take heart in that I think there is some improvement in pet responsibility by owners. Not everyone lets their cats roam any more. And many more of them neuter their cats than when I was a child. LOL when I was a kid (eons ago) no one would have spent money on vet bills for a cat.

I suppose that picture doesn't fit with your busy week of cat rescue. But it does mean that there's a chance that the cats you save will end up with good furever homes and people who love them and care for them like children.

Yes, those kittens you fed all night long may grow up to be somebody's baby. So on behalf of their future meowmies, we thank you!

On the other hand, WE'RE (still) ALL SICK AND TIRED OF IRRESPONSIBLE PET OWNERS!

P.S. Have you thought of changing your home phone number in a first step in quality-of-life improvement?

you need to tell ruth "no". period. I know you can because you've done it with me in the past. no room at the inn means NO ROOM AT THE INN! She has 2 bathrooms and plenty of room to foster. You want me to talk to her? cuz I will! and I will say that I have put nasty toms in my small bathroom and been subjected to scratches and she can do the same! Holy moley! I don't get some people- she has space gallore! we should teach her how to use it productively! (and she has money)

QSA you go ahead and unload on us all you want. I can sure understand wanting a break. I don't even want to go out on my porch anymore because all I see is more and more that I'm trying to feed and the shelter is on overload.
Sometimes I think you do need a bit of time away just to relax. I think you need a small vacation and if that means just staying home with the brood but ignoring the phone for a day or two then so be it.
It will never end and like I have been told many times here on PT... You can't save them all. If you don't take care of yourself then you won't be able to take care of all the kitties that need you.
Hang in there and take a break. You will feel lots better and be back at it in no time!!!

Barbara told her off in her sweet way! The cat she's concerned about...Ruth can get off her butt and take to NSAH. She already got the Ok from the shelter, but wants me to do all the dirty work of stealing the cat! Geesh. Not that the cat shouldn't be stolen. Ruth also has been pushing her downstairs neighbors (awsome couple, I've dealt with them before) to keep this cat in their bathroom! They have four dogs, and a cat, and two humans. Ruth has two baths, two bedrooms, herself, and 3 cats! She's a user, and always has been, and always will be. P.S..I'd love the luxery of taking 2X a year trips to the Bahama's etc.like Ruth does, and having someone watch my cats for free! (Jan & Doug...do). How can I turn away kittens that will otherwise be killed on the streets? Can someone give me a hint? Am I getting compulsive? Or intune to the horrors nobody else sees? I have a built in magnet in my head that gravitates towards dumpsters.....can someone tell me why?

Because you care. You, and the others who have posted here, have my highest respect for what you do for so many. No, you can't save them all, but it sounds like you save more than your share. It is a lot of hard work and you do need to take a break and take care of yourself first because if you're not able, who else is going to care? Anytime you feel the need to vent - feel free. We're here to listen.

Thank you everyone for the little cheering up party. So far so good today...the phone hasn't rung. And people wonder why I don't like giving out my home number to people. It's because of the ones that pass it along to people with cat problems. I can't save the world, I can't save the world....but I'd like to try!

QSAL - Sometimes you just need a break. There will never be an end to the kitties that need rescuing, and obviously there will never be an end to the compassion you have for these animals. What you are doing is wonderful, and above and beyond the "call of duty" in life. It's OK to be discouraged sometimes. Just think of all the kitties you have rescued over the years, and take pride in the lives you've saved. Keep your chin up and try not to pull your hair out!!

Summertime is the hardest - but it will be over with in a matter of a couple months!

    Peace
