Nevada Woman Sues Coors Over Son's Death
Lawsuit Says 'Coors Targets The Youth Of America'

    POSTED: 3:47 pm MDT April 17, 2004
    UPDATED: 4:10 pm MDT April 17, 2004

RENO, Nev. -- A Reno woman has sued Coors Brewing Co. over her son's death in a traffic accident, claiming the company promotes underage drinking.

In her lawsuit filed Wednesday in Washoe County District Court, Jodie Pisco contends Coors has failed in its duty to protect the country's youth from drinking. The suit seeks unspecified damages.

Pisco's 19-year-old son, Ryan, was killed in March 2002 after he drank Coors at a party in Reno and drove his girlfriend's car into a light pole at 90 mph.

"They should be well aware that people under 21 are drinking Coors," said Ken McKenna, Jodie Pisco's lawyer. "They should be liable for the damage caused by underage drinking."

Laura Sankey, a representative for Golden, Colo.-based Coors, said she could not comment on pending litigation but the company adamantly opposes drinking by minors.

"Coors Brewing Company doesn't want underage consumers, period," Sankey told the Reno Gazette-Journal. "Tragedies like this further reinforce why the fight against underage drinking and drunk driving must continue."

A person answering the phone at New West Distributing Inc., a local Coors distributor also named in the lawsuit, had no comment.

Pisco drank his favorite beer, Coors, at a party near the University of Nevada-Reno before becoming intoxicated and crashing the car.

Rescue workers said they found a Coors box in the car, and the wreckage reeked of alcohol.

"Coors sponsors and supports events that are attractive to minors and youthful persons, glorifying a culture of youth, sex and glamour while hiding the dangers of alcohol abuse and addiction," the suit says.

"Coors targets the youth of America with false images of conquest, achievement and success that are reckless, willful and a deliberate disregard for the impact of illegal alcohol consumption by underage youths," the suit adds.

Despite Pisco's intoxication and lack of a valid driver's license, his girlfriend, Heather Taylor, allowed him to drive off in her car, which had been given to her by her mother, Janice Taylor, the suit says.

The mother and daughter also were named in the suit but could not be reached for comment.

    ===================================

They should sue the carmaker, the last station that sold the gal gas, the car battery manufacturer -they made it possible to start the car, the tire maker-they made it possible for the car to roll, the city for putting the light pole there, Edison, for inventing the light bulb, Ben Franklin for inventing electriciy, whoever invented beer, the can it came in and the company who mined the aluminum that made the can that contained the beer, that Coors made...

Did I include the store owner that sold the beer and the truckdriver that dellivered it?

I just wish people would take responsiblity for their own actions. Maybe the farmers should be sued for growing the barley to make the beer

    i agree with you all

And then I remember, I'm the one who has "aliens" spilling the cat's water bowl all over the kitchen floor when I'm not around or sleeping. I'm gonna sue some people over the mess I end up walking in because it is not my cats! and I don't believe in aliens, so it must be.....hmmmmm... COOR's beer! Yay! Money for me!
Did you all see the "Chilled" kitten band that Queenscoopalot posted? (maybe they're responsible....)- that actually came from my mom and if you listen to the band then click on some others, some of them are pretty funny! (But don't watch and then drive!)

Once again... morons refuse to take responsibility for their own actions. grrrrr.....

Richard, you forgot the doctor who delivered the son, since without the good doc, the kid might not have survived the birthing process, and thus wouldn't have died while drunk on Coors.

We cannot kill all the lawyers - Cataholic is a lawyer!

Any judge that takes this case is insane. The lawyers should be ashamed of themselves. Yes, the mother is angry. Can she not do something constructive - instead of destructive - with her anger? Whoever sold him or gave him the beer is more responsible than anyone but the boy himself, or his parents.

I was going to say the exact same thing!! How dare you all say that!

People should take responsibility for their own actions...........not blame companies. It isn't Coor's fault that the kid, with his OWN CHOICE, drank their beer. They never forced him to. Its his own fault. Sad, but it is his own fault.

What about suing the paving company that paved the road that her drunken son drove on???
This has got to be the most absurd thing I've ever heard of. Any lawyer taking this case has got to be deranged.
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, champagne in one hand and strawberries in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming WOO HOO - What a Ride!

Actually, William Shakespeare said it, long, long ago.

Unbelievable! A 19 year old MAN knows the risks of drinking and driving. So if he had chosen to drink something else then that company would be sued!?!? I'm sure this mother is upset, but she sounds like a money grubbing idiot by accusing Coors. The lawyer sounds like an idiot too.

Every time a young adult does something wrong they blame age. "He was influenced by Coors" B frickin S! I'm 23 years old and I grew up in a middle class neighborhood. I am a good sample of American youth. Yes I would drink when I was underage, but I only trusted my boyfriend to drive on those nights. Honestly, now that I am over the legal age to drink not much has changed. If I drink my boyfriend doesn't or if he does then I don't unless we get a room or stay with a friend. I was just as responsible before I was 21.

She should blame the only person there is to blame, her son!

The lawyer who took the case is the lawyer who tried to sue a
heavt metal rock band because some kid committed suicide....

The cops found that the band's record was in his stereo....

    ergo, they were to blame.

This falls into the same category as the lawsuit in NH from a woman whose daughter was killed while driving a Ford Escort. The daughter was killed in a high speed accident in which she ran into a tree. This was prior to airbags being federally mandated, but ford offered them in the Taurus, Corwn Vic, etc. (BTW, the daughter was not wearing a seatbelt either). The mother sued Ford for "Economic discrimination" (her daughter couldn't afford a taurus, etc, so ford was practicing economic discrimination). The lawsuit was eventually thrown out of court, but only after years of trials and appeals.

As far as who is more resposible for the lawsuit, chances are the lawyer, for without the lawyer the suit would not have been filed.
