    Not sure what to do...

A woman I work with adopted a 7 week old kitten. She told me today that her youngest son is allergic to her. I am SO tempted to take her. However...I worry about FIP.

When MooShoo was 3 months old, he tested positive for FIP. It doesn't mean he HAS FIP, only that he was exposed to it. He is very healthy, weighing in a 14 pounds!

This kitten was taken from her mama when she was 6 weeks old. I would hate to expose her to MooShoo at such a young age and have her become sick from it. A kitten that young is susceptible to infection because of their immune systems not being fully developed and FIP can and IS fatal!

So, anyone is the MI area care to adopt a 7 week old female kitten?? If so, PM me. I'd hate to have her to go a shelter where she will inevitably be exposed to a URI.

    *sigh*

Donna, I'm sorry that I can't help you but I just wanted to wish you good luck in finding the little kitten a new foster home or maybe even a forever loving home. Please keep us updated.

By the way, how was she able to adopt a kitten so young? Aren't they supposed to be at least 8 weeks old?

I'm sorry to hear this kitten was taken away her mom at such an early age. Had the mom abandoned her?

I really hope she is healthy and you'll be able to find her a forever home. Best of luck!!

    a moot point now...

So, not that it matters at this point, but wondering where is mom and littermates and why kitten was taken from mom too early...? As you know, a good 8 weeks of nursing (and more if poss.) is best for immune system. Not that 8 weeks of nursing would have protected against fip.. How do you protect your other cats, do you do the fip nasal spray "vaccine"? I had an fip kitten years ago and it was very difficult to deal with for both me and him! Cheops went near blind, and after a spinal tap determined no spinal fluid, was when a definative dx. could be made. Cuz the titer they do is a waste of money and means nothing!

This kitten came from a friend of her's whose cat had a litter. When she told me she was getting the kitten, I asked her how OLD the kitten was and she said 6 weeks. I told her that was WAY too young to separate the kittens from mama, but I guess the idiotic owner wanted all the kittens gone.

Anyway, I told her she might want to look calling a rescue organization because EVERYONE is looking for kittens. I didn't see her at work today so I don't know what she's decided.

I feel kinda guilty not taking her myself. But I'd never forgive myself if she got sick from being exposed to FIP from MooShoo.

    I'll keep you posted.

Donna, I'll have to dig up the Catnip Newsletter I have regarding FIP. From what I recall it is much less contagious than many think. About 5-10% of exposed kitties contract it, and it's more genetics involved in spreading it. That's why some breeders get it (Leslie can fill you in on her Cheops...from a breeder). I have had FIP 2x in all the years rescuing, and with several hundred cats coming through my doors! I think FeLV is much more contagious to others! But the little one most likely will get adopted fast being it's spring.

I told Chris that she'd get adopted very quickly seeing it's Spring and all. MY problem is I can't afford to have her tested (she's still too young yet) for all the necessary diseases as well as have her spayed. That's why I'm thinking she'd be better off calling one of the rescue organizations around here.
