    Ricky's Prostate

Well, many of you don't know it but Ricky has never been neutered even though I have always wanted him to be. My husband and daughter were totally against it. We got the two girl chihuahuas spayed early but they wouldn't let me do Ricky.
Ricky will be four in February and has never mated so it seems like a mute point but sometimes fate steps in and helps out.
Ricky has been acting moody lately and I noticed a discharge from his private so my son took him to see our Vet and he did the exam that our husband's hate so much and Ricky's prostate is enlarged and he has an infection.
The Vet said "mate him or fix him" My husband and daughter finally agree that it is more important to have Ricky and so when his infection is cleared up, he is getting fixed.
I never heard of it but I guess things just sort of backed up on him.

Oh dear I hope Ricky will soon feel better. It sounds like he is about to get the Big Snip. If it's any consolation to him, let him know that my Ripley wasn't "snipped" until he came to live with us last year. The vet had estimated him to be about 3 yrs. old at the time and he was completely intact. Though Bella was spayed we still had him neutered. I must say that he bounced back just fine. In fact it was hard keeping him quiet that first day. Ripley says "Hang in there buddy. It'll be over before you know it."

I just visited your album. What cute pictures! I love the one of Ricky sneezing!

Although I've never had a male dog, my vet explained to me early on in my doggie Mom years that it is imperative to spay and neuter dogs that are not to be bred, not only to prevent unwanted litters but for health reasons as well. Unaltered, females have a much higher incidence of breast cancer and pyometra and males, testicular cancer and prostatitis. It confounds me why human males project their own fears and apprehensions regarding the "family jewels" issue onto their males dogs, especially when it puts their pet's health at risk. I hope sweet Ricky is feeling better very soon. And I'm sure he'll do just fine with the "big snip!" Hugs to you cutie Ricky!

    Ricky update

Sorry, lots of things going on here but Ricky has had his surgery. He gets his stitches out on Saturday.
His prostate was still in large when he went to the Vet's last week so we had them do it right away.
He is doing very well and should make a complete recovery.

Thank you for asking about him and I apologize for not coming back here sooner.

You know - I always wondered if dogs ever got prostate problems! Silly thing to wonder I know, but Jake's getting to that age . . . he needs to be let out more often, so I was wondering aout that. Now I know!

So glad he is ok! ::hugs:: My mom has a Shelite who wasn't nuetered untill he was 12 years of age. Not getting him nuetered when we first got him was the worst thing we ever did, he ended up with cancer and having to hae surgery at the age of 12. It took him about 6 or 7 months to bounce back from it
