I believe you should have like 2 inches across the whole bottom of the tank.

Normally it says how much you need on the gravel bag.

I used to use a lot of gravel - like 2 inches - but the water would get all murky, so I only have 1/2 inch in there now, and the tank cleaner. But you do need gravel as a place for the good bacteria to grow.
