    potty training

I need help we got this puppy (roxy) a toy pomerianin about 1 month ago I am having a real hard time potty training her I try to get her out if I am home every hour. If we are away from her which is 2 days a week she is in a cage for 9 hours she holds it fine. But after we take her outside it seems she has to pee every 10 minutes for like 2 hours the vet said that is normal beacuse she is so young. The question I have is I want to get Puppie pads. Do you think it is to late and that will work? Does anyone have any suggestions?

    How old is she??

My mother in law got a pom puppy a year and a half ago, and he was a little tough to potty train too.

9 hours seems like an awfully long time to leave a little puppy alone. Is she in a crate the whole time? Dogs don't like to mess in their crates, but that is a long time to hold it--is there a room you can gate her off in? My mother in law used her kitchen and laundry room. Casey's actual crate was in the laundry room with the door open, but he could go around the kitchen and get some exercise during the day when she had to work. She used pee pads for him too, and it took him a few days, but he learned to use them. She still puts them down at night, in case he wakes up in the middle of the night and he will use them. He stays in her kitchen in his crate during the night, again with the door open.

I would try out the pee pads, they seem to work for little dogs. My husband's grandmother has a chi who uses them too. Is there any way you can come home at lunch or any time to let her out? Or do you have a neighbor or friend or family member who can come by when you are working??

I'm sure someone else will have more advice for you.

Welcome to Pet Talk--I would love to see a picture of your pom!!!

    Good luck with the housetraining!!

Pee pads are a good idea. My pomeranian, Bitsy is 4 years old. We crate trained her, but she was only in there for a few hours at the most. Put the pee pads in her " favorite" accident spot. She'll pick it up in no time. On another note be sure to keep her on good food, Nutrition is so very important. If you are going to get her food at the supermarket, please do NOT get kibbles & bits, beniful, or pedigree, to name a few. The only foods at the grocery store worth anything are Purina O.N.E. and Iams. The pet store is better, Nutro, Science Diet, Eukanuba, Pro plan, ect. are good. I personally feed my dogs (and cats) Natural Balance. http://www.naturalbalanceinc.com/. Also get her use to being brushed. You'll need a "rake" and a "long tooth comb" for her stand-off coat. Good luck with her.
