Mish & Mitzi's Xmas "gift" - Teeth Cleaning!

Well, it's scheduled. My vet has been after me ever since I adopted my two to get their teeth cleaned - I just didn't have the $$ until I got my Xmas bonus, so that's their "gift" this year - teeth cleaning! As we don't know their history, my vet said that rescue or feral cats just don't eat the right stuff on their own; now that they're with me, their diets have stabilized to good, cat-(and teeth) healthy food.

Mishi is scheduled for this coming Wednesday and Mitzi for next Saturday. From reading a few threads here, I think I'll go with the not feeding both of them - just so much easier, although Mitzi will be a problem. The little minx discovered yesterday that she can jump up to the kitchen counter where I usually put their food bowls when feeding time is over (see the some cats are slow thread )

I'm kinda nervous as I know they have to be put under, but I know it's good for them. Mishi's gums are really bad so I scheduled him first.

Of course, I'll keep you posted as to the outcome.

I'm trying to get my hubby to give me the gift of a really good checkup for my Grover, money is tight here too. So everybody wish me luck, that would be a pretty good Christmas gift from him, don't you think????

Filou has had tooth cleaning 3 times up to now (he's 7). My human dentist tells me that it is mainly genetic - some people build up lots of tartar and others don't. Tigris and he eat the same stuff and have the same age and Tigris only had to go one time.

I am always sorry about Filou but it was very easy for him. I don't feed both the night before as Tigris has a higher risk of getting hmmm let's say a little round.

All the best for Mitzi and Mishi. They'll have sweeter kisses after

I am sure both will do fine and I am sure that they hardest part will be not feeding them. My two are going in January, I am going to try to make it the same day.

Let us know how they are doing.

So far Storm and Sunny have both had their teeth cleaned. Everything went well. The hardest part for me was to keep them quiet when they got home. They both wanted to be with their brothers so they could play.

Prayers and positive thoughts are coming your way and I hope that everything goes well. I'm sure it will so try not to worry too much.

Aw, poor Mishi and Mitzi!! My three have all had their teeth cleaned in the last year. Sam and Daisy had it done last year and Jessica earlier this year. Although she is the mother and was a feral cat for maybe three years before we got her, her teeth were the cleanest!

Good luck to Mishi and Mitzi!

    Mishi's Day at the Vet

OK Today's the day. Mishi meowed himself silly this morning, being all cute and funny - begging for food and water. Of course he had to fight me when I went to put him into his carrier, but I'm bigger than he is -- not by much, though! He meowed all the way to the vets (across the street from my apartment). Paws crossed and prayers please that all goes well for my big boybee. Thanks!

We've got our paws crossed here. I'm sure he will do well.

Ripley had his teeth cleaned this past Feb. for the first time ever at age 11 (well three weeks short of 11). He did just great. I've had my dog's teeth cleaned 4 times over the past 10 years and she's always done just great. Unfortunately she has rotten teeth and has to have a complete dental about every 18-24 months. She doesn't eat people food either.

Best of luck to Mishi and Mitzi.

    Update

Just called the vet (she was about to call me). Mishi is resting; as bright-eyed and bushy-tailed as can be expected. They had to extract two teeth. He's resting comfortably and waiting for me to come 'n get him. My poor Boybee! Any of you with cats who have had extractions -- anything I need to know re feeding initially? healing time? complications? I know the vet will probably explain all to me when I pick him up -- I'm just a worried meowmie!

He's fine, although MIGHTY stoned! LOL! If you thought his eyes were big before, you should see them with his pupils all dilated up on pain meds! They're HUGE!

He hadn't eaten at all since last night so he was starving when I got him home! He's now eaten two Whiskas treats packets - soft food for a few days, antibiotics for about 5 days and pain meds "as needed." How do you tell if a cat is in pain?

What's really strange is that he hasn't meowed once since I picked him up -- not a peep! I'm so used to him talking up a storm, muttering and meowing incessantly, commenting continuously. Maybe all the meowing was due to tooth pain? They extracted one broken tooth and another one that was loose - teeny-tiny way back pre-molars.

He did just go and knead Muffy the teddy bear, so I know he's on his way back to normal.

Mitzi is hissing at him because he smells different, but she did allow him to meatloaf on the bed with her, so I guess it's not too bad.

He's resting quietly in the dark bedroom right now. I think he'll be fine .... until Saturday when I take Mitzi in.

Thanks everyone for the good thoughts.

I'm glad to hear that he's back home again and doing well. I'm sure he'll be back to his old self in a few days. Take care now Mishi.

I'm glad that Mishi is home and is making a good recovery from his dental visit. Good luck to Mitzi too. Extra snuggles for both of them.
