A good day and a bad day at the shelter

The good part was when I went there last night to work with some of the dogs and while I was there 2 dogs got adopted!!! This is Annie who went to a lovely couple who will be able to give her a great deal of time and love:

The bad part was that I found out that the state is doling out low cost spay/neuter certificates to the different municipalities on an equal basis. So the City Shelter who gets hundreds of dogs a month get the same amount as a suburb shelter that gets 15 dogs a month. The city will only pay for basic shots and euthanasia, so spaying or neutering is paid for by the adoptive parents. Sure makes adopting at the City Shelter less attractive than the suburb shelters. The low cost certificates make the cost $35 while full price is between $150 and $200.

Needless to say I will be doing a great deal of letter writing and phone calling. To me this is unconscionable. The employees at the shelter were even calling other shelters and getting their extra certificates, but the state said they couldn't do that.

Annie is a doll!! Glad to hear that she got a wonderful forever home!!!

    Clara,
Is there any way any of us could write a letter to help you out?? If so, give me an address, and I would be happy to.
    It just doesn't seem fair.

There is a vet in Florida who I read about who does all spay and neutering for free--too bad there aren't more like him around.

I wish you could help, but since it is a state program only people who live in New York could send a letter or email. For those of you that live in the state of New York a listing of the State Representatives is here . If it is happening in my area, I am sure it is happening in the entire state.

The city of Buffalo is basically bankrupt at this point, so the city will do only what is absolutely necessary by law. If anyone knows of any statistical analysis of how much more cost effective a mandatory spay/neutering program is please point me in the right direction. I have spent most of the day trying to find something.

You know if every vet gave 1/2 a day a month to low cost or no cost spaying and neutering, we might start making a dent in the pet overpopulation problem.
