uh.....smelly butts?

hmm....how can I put this ...uh....delicately? I have two beautiful siblings. Emily stays fres h as a daisy and sweet smelling - always grooming. Eliot - (nicknamed "Smelibutt") seems to have no interst in grooming that particular area - though spends plenty of time primping. I have bought a tub of special cat wipes and they do a good job - but could there be any other reason for this?? Both are neutered since 4 months and are now almost 9 months. We are talking serious BO here...

Could be anal glands. Ask your vet or a pet groomer that does cats.

Cubby has had anal gland problems a few times. He would still bathe that area, but not as much as all the other parts of his body. He would go crazy and start licking his tail and his belly, very fast and would cry. When he went into the vet to see what was going on, his anal glands were full. I never heard of such a thing as that. But my vet told me it is very common for indoor cats. He has had to get his emptyed twice now. And if you want to talk about BO. When they empty them, OMG it smells so bad. We had to ride home with the windows down and try to breath. When we got him home we opened every window in the apartment, and he left for about a half an hour. When we got back he was done cleaning him self as well as the smell was gone.

My vet also explained to me that it is something I can drain at home. I don't want to learn how to. Cubby would hate me forever if I tried to drain them. If it turns into a problem that has to be taken care of every few months or so, the vet might also end up removing his anal glands.

Does your other cats bathe him? My Chloe always has somthing on her behind. We found that we had to change her food because she had "gas".The vet said that she might have a food allergy that causes gases and she does'nt not like the smell. Corbyn dosn't seem to mind tho he is always washing her. Then he gives my husband a kiss!! hehehehe

Meeshe (orange) although visibly clean has the stinky butt syndrome, and the vet has to empty his anal glands periodically. Schuyler (white) exudes no offensive odor yet collects fecal matter outside that area and simply refuses to cleanse his anus, so his meowmmy (that's me) must take baby wipes in hand and tidy him up now and then. They are both neutered males and at the risk of sounding sexist I will do it anyway by offering an overused cliche . . . maybe it is a guy thing??!

YES I do believe it may be a guy thing!! Emily is so fastidious and somewhat concerned for Eliot - tries to keep him clean too, but he always turns it into a wrestling match! I have found a dispenser of kitty wipes and chase him down from time to time but yes, I do believe you are right about it being male related - he just can't be bothered
