Chewing on wires?

Hello, I am new to the dog side of Pet Talk. A friend of mine just got a new puppy, but it chews on wires. Does any one know any way to get him to stop chewing on wires? He watches him right now but he is afraid to leave him home by him self.

Any suggestions will be very appreciated. And I will be sure to let him know. Thank you every one.

The pup shouldn't really be left alone for long periods of time. Pups will be pups, it's pretty much inevitable. When they're not around the pup, how about crating? They would have piece of mind that their pup would be safe and it helps ALOT with potty training.

I will make sure to ask him about crating him. He trys not to leave him alot for very long but he also has to go to work at night. I'm not sure where he puts the pup while he's at work. I just got the message today about his pup chewing on wires.

He can also spray his wires with bitter apple. It stopped Seven's chewing on things very quickly.

My Ruby chews on wires .......... she chewed the plugs off the fan, the trailer, hammer drill, anything ............... until I put black pepper on the lead of the trailer, and tabasco on the wires leading to the plugs of any of the appliances that are unplugged.

She has stopped .......... but I am sure she will start again on something, and I will just do the same again.

I know alot of people are going to get ticked at me for saying this, but I will anyways. First a disclaimer: I rarely use physical punishment on my dogs. I do not promote dog abuse.

I had the same problem with my dogs. To me, that is very serious. It could kill them. I took the cord and spanked them with it. I wanted them to be scared of it and associate it with pain because it could kill them. I never use my hands on my dogs (or my child...I raise them practically the same), but I feel that when it comes to things that can jeapordize their lives, you have to be quick and harsh to make sure they remember.

Again, 99.9% of other pet people will not agree with me. But I don't think that electricity is something that trial and error discipline should not be used on. You want to be sure to get the message across to your dog that those wires can hurt.

I see your point ......

..... however, because I did not catch Ruby doing it (even though I KNOW it was her), I could not smack her with the cord. Some trainers have said to me, if you catch her doing it, then discipline works, but because I never did ..........

AND luckily for me, she has NEVER chewed a live cable. She only seem to be interested in the PLUG on the end ......... and only if it is not plugged into the wall.
