    dogs in cars

The past few days, it has been extremely hot here (over 90 degrees), and twice, I have seen dogs in cars. At work the other night, a customer pointed one out, and asked me to find the owner and get her back outside. Luckily, she was just picking up food, and was right back outside. Yesterday, however, I was out at the lake, and as I was leaving I heard loud barking. I got closer and there were 2 rotties in a car. I went over to say hello, and their owner came by. I asked her why on earth she had these dogs in the car, and she said "we're not really supposed to have dogs at the park, and I didn't bring their leashes, and they are in the shade"
Not only were these 2 rotts jammed in the back of a Jetta, but there was puke on the ground by there. I asked her if they were sick, and she said one of them gets very anxious in the car, and he threw up-- why the hell would she bring them out on such a hot day, only to leave them in the car????
I asked her if she knew how fast a dog could overheat in this weather being in the car, and her response "the windows are down."
I had to walk away before I really laid into her. If the dog is anxious about the car, just being in it will drive him over the edge, and in a hot car...arghhhhh!!!!!
I had my car, so I didn't have room, or I would have taken them both.
    Stupid people make me mad!!!

Yes, it amazes me how stupid people are! I won't even leave my dogs in the BACK of my truck when it is hot outside, let alone cooped up in the car.

I'm also livid when I see dogs riding unleashed in the back of pick up trucks.

I have a pick up myself, but my dogs either ride in front or in a carrier that has been secured to the bed. And they don't stay in the carrier for mor than a 15 minute ride.

Of course in South Carolina, the bed of a pick up is a good place for the KIDS to ride. So much for the seat belt laws.

Mary I totally agree with you. Sometimes when I want to take Missy to the park and a friend wants to ride in the truck with me they say "can't you just put her in the bed of the truck." I don't even let people ride in the back of my truck much less my dog. So if someone wants to ride with me and Missy they either have to let her sit on their lap or they can follow me in their own car.

Dogs in cars on hot days just drive me nuts!! How selfish and stupid are these people?

Remember the guy that was supposed to drop his baby off at daycare and forgot and left her in the car all day while he was at work? And is was in the 90's.

    Some people just shouldn't breed.

I'm heading out Saturday with Oz, on an 11 hour car ride,
to meet up with a friend in Arkansas for a backcountry
backpacking trip. I know I'm going to have to make frequent
stops to go to the bathroom and I haven't seen a reststop
yet that'll let you bring a pet into the bathroom. I'm too
cynical about people to leave him tried under a shade tree,
while I go in real quick, because I'm afraid someone would
    steal him.

I guess I could break the rules and just take him into the
bathroom with me. I hate doing that though. Dogs already
get a bum rap from non-dog folks, without taking them places
it specifically says they aren't allowed.

So I think I'm going to take 2 sets of car keys and lock Oz in the
car, with the engine running and the a/c on. Just hope my
engine is loud enough that people realize he's not locked in
a hot car and bust my window open. Maybe I should make a
    sign.

    Par...

In Australia it is against the law to leave children unattended in a car and the same should apply to animals. They can dehydrate and die just as quickly as a child can, especially in warm weather. These people are very irresponsible and should be ashamed of their behaviour.

On a lighter note however, the title of this post reminded me of a website which often brightens my day. Check this out for a laugh www.dogsincars.co.uk

I was in my backyard with Ceebers yesterday afternoon, it was about 80 degrees...I noticed he started panting, I marched myself straight to target and bought him a wading pool so he could cool down during the day...

Why is it that other dog owners can't do that?? Do they realize that is so horribly cruel to their dog??

Daisy rides in the van (all over it--whichever rear seat she chooses) by her air vent. The back windows only open a little, so her nose may be sticking out somewhat. And I make sure the child locks are on, so someone doesn't accidentally open the slide door.(she likes to bolt) I see plenty of poor pooches locked in hot cars while their owners are shopping... would'nt ya just like to slap them??
