    Begging for MY food???

Begging for food...every time i sit down at the kitchen table Max comes and "begs for food". I do not give him table scraps because he will probably expect it more. Heeelllllpppp http://www.imagestation.com/album/?id=4290209907

Ok well this happened with my pup too! What I did to correct this was very easy and fast. When I eat, I sit...eat and ignore him. No pats on the head...no slipping food...no eye contact. When I'm done, I give him a bit (depending if it's safe for him). This way, Kai learnt that he gets nothing while I eat..and if he's good he gets some at the end. I even left a HUGE juicy hamburger right in front of him and left him alone in the room for a couple minutes...out of sight but I still could see him...he didn't touch the thing. This also helps with dominance(SP?) issues. The pack leader ALWAYS eats first...however much the leader wants...the scrap goes to the other group members. Hope this helps =]

A thing I know that helps is to feed the dog his food while you eat. That way, he may want to eat his own food. If this is not the issue, and he ignores his food and stares at you the whole time, when you are done your food, you cooly put your dishes AND your dogs unfinished food away. This will make the dog realize that if he doesn't eat when the food is out for him, than he doesn't eat at all.

I had the same problem .........for a while. We went to my gramdma's house for easter and gave Ringo some of my ham. After that he wouldn't stop begging for food but just keep ignoring him he will soon learn that he can't persuade you
Don't Delay Neuter or Spay!! Ringo Rocks!

That's a truly retarded thing to do. You know damn well that you're not going to give your dog any of your food and that the dog will beg, yet you set out his food while you are eating, knowing he won't touch his. Then you take his food away, starving him. Wow, you sure make me proud, wolfsoul. You took his food away! You shouldn't own any animals. I feel bad for them all.

It is my fault you completely snapped at me, because I didn't explain in fully.

Most people eat three meals a day. You try it at breakfast, you try it at lunch, and again at dinner. If it doesn't work, you FEED the dog, not STARVE it, you feed it, and repeat the process again and again until it learns that it's not getting any food from you, but it's food will be set out for it to eat. It will learn to eat the food that is it's own.

I've been lucky enough to chat with professional trainerabout this tactic, and it's one that she recommends. I've also read it in a book at the library, if you don't believe me, I'll get the name tomorrow.

And when you teach a puppy to come, do you not call it, knowing that it won't come? A dog has to learn what to do before you can expect something of it, and it needs to know what to expect of itself, and the consequences.

    You took his food away!
um, what? I don't own a "him" and I've never trained my dogs using this tactic.

I would very much appreciate it if you wouldn't continue to swear at me, make strong assumations, make irrelevant comments, deliberatly try to hurt me (which won't be happening any time soon ) and I would also be pleased if you would stop snapping at me before you asked and knew what I was talking about. It was my fault I didn't explain it, I apoligize, but all you could have done was simply asked.

Wow, you sure make me proud, wolfsoul
That's too bad, because obviously someone needs some pride sucked out of her already.

Please, if you reply, don't try to argue with me. Also think back to what happened last time

halter91-great! Pretty soon, you may be able to use the hamburger test on your dog!

wolfsoul-I should try that technique on kai. He doesn't touch his food although I feel sorry for him because he's the pickiest eater you'll find and feeding him something disgusting (in my opinion) like eukanuba would just make me feel horrible. If he doesn't eat his raw foods when we switch to that diet, I'll try that out!

I definitely feed Cisco his own food whenever I'm eating. He will actually beg for his own food and not mine. I know this because I can set his food next to me and he will ask for his food and not mine. This technique definitely works for Cisco and I. He is happy because he gets to eat with me and I'm happy because he is not eating whatever I'm eating. My food most likely would not be good for him anyway! Sometimes we make a game of it. I will hide or throw his kibble and he will hunt for it. No problem and he actually looks forward to it. He is allowed a certian amount of food a day and these meals are always taken from his total amount allowed. It really isn't too dificult to do. I also have left a plate of food out and gone into the other room without Cisco ever touching a bite!! Some people crate thier dogs when they eat and that is what they are used to. I just think it is a matter of preference. There is no one way of doing anything!!

halter91--glad to hear that it worked!!!

I have food issues with Kito--Abbey and Riley love to eat, and Kito is so picky. His food can't be left down all the time, or one of the others will eat it, so he needs to eat while the others do, or I pick it up, and he tries again later (when he "asks" for it). The only time it is left down, is when I am not home, and the other 2 are in their pen, then he can eat at his leisure, which I think he prefers

Wolfsoul--I understand the technique--and it sounds reasonable to me--the dog doesn't eat his or her food, they don't get any of yours!!

Cisco's mom--I throw Kito's food all the time--sometimes I even make a trail with the kibble to the food dish

Coco used to do that all the time. After she went to live with my dad though, she stopped. i think what my dad did to train her, was take her into another room every time she we ate until finally my dad just had to point some were and say "Coco" firmly and she just walked away. ^-^ sorry if that doesnt help

    on another note....

JGuitaristR do you know jordan personally? no? didnt think so

Jordan and i are really close friends and i've seen her with her animals more than once, so i would know for a fact that jordan is anything but a horrible pet owner. If that insult had been pointed at me i would have been very upset. many people who are pet owners know that the worse thing a person can do i start insulting the care of a pet.

So let me explain to you that jordan in an AMAZING animal owner who definatly puts her animals first.

She doesnt exactly have that much money, but whenever her mom gives her money for lunch, Jordan immediatly puts it away and goes hungry so that she can buy her pets a nice treat or something. She refuses to sleep over at peoples houses unless her rats can come with her, and she spoils her pets like nothing else.

Please dont make assumtions you know nothing about.

Firstly, calling anyone retarded is rude, mean, and uncalled for and that's basically what you've done. No one should even use that word.

Secondly, who are you to tell anyone they shouldn't own any animals??? I think it's rather obvious from her posts that she loves her pets and that they are treated very well.

Are you the judge and jury for everyone here on this board or just for Jordan? Why the personal (seems that way from this post and the other one about the water) attack?
