Glucomsamine with MSN

Hello All,

I have been giving my "girls" (dogs) Glucomsamine for quite a few years now. I started with just the Glucomsamine then progressed to Glucomsamine/Chondroitrin/fishoil and am now back to the Glucomsamine & Chondroitrin. Lately I have seen on the market Glucomsamine & MSM.

Is anyone familiar with MSM? and is as good as the Chondroitrin?

There is a good size price difference, so I am just curious.

give my older female Glucosamine/Chondroiten
too.

Smokey gets one or two 500 mg "Glucosamine Complex" pills every day to help his *trick knee*.
Our Vet suffers from *sore knees* himself, and suggested that the WalMart, over-the-counter "cheapie" pills were what he (the VET) used for himself! Smoke's pills are cheap - only $3-$4 for 60 pills!

Doc Mike advised that humans benifit from the combination of Glucosamine AND Chondroitin taken together - but "most" Veterinary studies suggest that the addition of the Chondroitin does NOT show any benifits for dogs or animals. He showed me several prescription Vet meds - the less expensive were only Glucosamine; the "pricey" ones had the added Chondroitin... His suggestion? Go to WalMart and buy the plain Glucosamine, and NO Rx: required!

Doc never mentioned the addition of MSN (Methyl Sulfonyl Methane)... possibly because the MSN has not been considered for Vet use...?

I did a http://www.google.com search using the term "Glucosamine AND MSN" and got many pages of *hits*... MOST of the hits were pages touting the merits of MSN for humans - here's just one >>

My dog Buddy (R.B.) took Cosequin DS for 7 years. It has

Contents: Chewable Tablet
Glucosamine HCL 99+% 500 mg
Sodium Chondroitin Sulfate 95%
Mixed Glycosaminoglycans 5% 400 mg
Ascorbate (Manganese Ascorbate) 33 mg
Manganese (Ascorbate) 5 mg

He was later switched to Synovi-MSM by his vet. It has MSM*

(Methylsulfonylmethane) 800 mg.
Glucosamine 500 mg. , Perna Canaliculus 300mg. & Vitamin C
10Mg.
I honestly think he did better on the Cosequin.

I just purchased 180 pills for $20 (of course I had to do a "buy one get one free" thing to get it, so actually it was $40 a bottle and I got a bottle free - total of 360 pills).

I stood in front of all the bottles, different brands, different prices, different ingredients for so long I could have taken root!
LOL

I think when those run out I will try the Walmart brand of (just) Glucosamine next.

Carina has been taken Glucosamin/MSM for the last two weeks. I took her to the vet because she looked like she had trouble going up steps and getting up. She has arthritis in her back legs, which is not unusual for a 10 years old pup. Since I didn't want to fool around with things I didn't know, I got the powder form that my vet recommended ($60.00 for six months supply) and I give her two scoops every day with her food. It will take from four to five weeks to really show results but I heard very good reports about it.

What dog food do you feed Carina?

Em has arthritis and (had) allergies and Bailey has the hip dysplacia, after trying every dog food on the market I found Innova (it's expensive and I can only find it at the feed store) but it has helped my soooo much. That along with the added glucosamine has Em back to her old self. Her allergies have been gone for over a year and she is able to play ball again. Bailey still walks like Marilyn Monroe but she gets up and down without a problem.

You will have to keep me informed if you notice a difference with the MSM.

I want to start giving Jack the glucosimene pills and when I was shopping for them yesterday, under the dosage it said for dogs over 100 pounds (Jack is 127) I would have to give him 5 pills a day! Does that sound right to anybody? I was hoping for a one a day type pill. Any ideas?

My Chiropractor told me not to follow the directions on the bottle. I should start myself as well as my girls on one a day and if need be increase from there. My girls are 49 and 79lbs. I give them one pill in the morning with food or a treat.

Are you starting Jake as preventitive measures or does he already have arthritis / hip dysplacia etc?

I would start him on 1 pill a day in the morning (with food or a treat) and continue that for a week or so. If need be increase him to a pill in the morning and another one at night. See how that goes and increase the morning and evening dosage as you see necessary

He's a big boy it sounds like, I give mine the 500 mg, but they also have 750 mg you can buy.

What kind of food are you feeding him? There is also a product called Missing Link that is really good. It comes with and without glucosamine.

I wanted to start Jack on the glucosamine just as a preventative. He had ACL surgery on one leg and now the other seems to be a little touchy. Where he is a big dog and almost 6, I thought it might do some good. The vet said that the pills could only help him so...

At lunch time, I bought a bottle of glucosamine sulfate pills at 1000 mg at WalMart. It was in the people section so I'm not sure if I bought the right thing and what to give Jack. I'm going to call my vet and see if that's the right thing. I have a feeling the mg might be too high, but then again I would rather give him the least amount of pills. He already takes enough as it is!! (Phenobarbital for seizures and Soloxine for thyroid)

Jack has been on a diet for a few months and has lost 16 pounds!! (Hopefully another thing that will help his leg situation!) I feed him Nutro Max Weight Control dry food mixed with a little bit of the Nutro Max canned. Thanks for the info!

Smokey is about 40 pounds;
and now takes one 500 mg tablet of Glucosamine...

So with Jack weighing 127 pounds;
the 1,000 mg size does not seem like too much of a dose.

Doc DID say that he should receive TWICE the dose (he took TWO 500 mg pills a day) for 2 months...
Doc advised it took a while for the Glucosamine to begin to have an effect and start helping the effected joint(s) - hence the double dose to get started. Took at least that long to see the difference in Smokey. Now we're down to 1 x 500 mg per day - unless I notice him limping more than usual. If he seems to be having a difficult time - the dosage goes up to two-a-day for a few days.

I did talk to my vet and he said that I could give Jack 2 pills a day at 1000 mg each. The bottle I have will last about 3 months and the vet said that by then I should know if it's working or not. I feel like I'm drugging up my dog all the time, but hopefully this will help him in some way. It breaks my heart sometimes when he tries to get up from laying down and it seems like his back legs aren't going to hold him. So I guess we will see what happens!

Don't worry about drugging Jack with the glucosamine, he is going to be so happy to be relieved from some of the soreness/stiffness.

If you give him 2,000 mg, you will probably want to give it once in the morning and once in the evening. It will balance him better, just make sure you give him something to eat with it

We went to the vet yesterday & they gave us GLYCO-FLEX III, the downside of this it costed $83.14 (But I found it on the internet for about 1/2 that price). Phred, would you say that the stuff you get at Wal-Mart is just as good? I don't want to pay lots of $$$ for something that I could easily get for alot cheaper.
