frustrated

Ringo still is'nt fully potty trained and i've had him for over a month he usually goes outside when i take him out but he won't bark to go out he just finds a spot inside. I'm getting so frustrated and everyone else on this board says they trained their dog in like a week I feel so irresponsible and incapable like he'll never get trained!!! how do I get him to bark to go outside ? and how long did it take you guys to potty train your dogs?

ummm, i really dont see how barking o go outside will help anything.....you could try leaving the door to the backyard open, that way when he wants to go out he could,when i got Daisy (the golden) the breeder had aready housetrained her. With Molly (the collie) i left the door to the backyard open, that way she could go out when she needed too, and was housetrained in 2 days.

Hi puppygrrl!

I had my Collie potty trained in less than 2 weeks and here's
what I did. First I hung some bells from the door knob and
everytime I took him outside, I'd pop the bells with my hand. It
took him less than a month to start popping the bells with his
nose to communicate that he wanted to go out. Next, I didn't
give him a chance to make a mistake in the house. I took him
right outside after napping, playing, eating, drinking or if he started
sniffing the floor. As soon as he'd start pottying outside, I'd
say "Go Potty" and then lavish him with praise. If I needed some
time to do things where I couldn't watch him like a hawk, he went
into his crate. He did not spend long periods of time in the crate,
because you don't want them to have no other choice but to soil
their crate. That totally defeats the purpose of the crate. Once
he started ringing the bell to let me know when he needed to go
out, I stopped using the crate.

I may be wrong, but I think the smaller breeds could be a little more difficult to housetrain. My mother in law has a pom, who still has an accident now and then. You just have to be consistent with your dog--keep him in the crate when you can't watch him (but not too much), and take him out a lot. After eating, sleeping, playing and when he gets out of his crate.
Another thing we did to get an idea of how much he goes, is kept a journal of everything Riley did--potty, eat, sleep--it sounds dumb, but it worked. One more thing, if mornings are tough, because he has to go faster than you can get out there, try setting your alarm for 4am or something, and get him out then--he won't have to go as much first thing when you wake up--it will give you a minute to get him out there.
