I may be wrong, but I think the smaller breeds could be a little more difficult to housetrain. My mother in law has a pom, who still has an accident now and then. You just have to be consistent with your dog--keep him in the crate when you can't watch him (but not too much), and take him out a lot. After eating, sleeping, playing and when he gets out of his crate.
Another thing we did to get an idea of how much he goes, is kept a journal of everything Riley did--potty, eat, sleep--it sounds dumb, but it worked. One more thing, if mornings are tough, because he has to go faster than you can get out there, try setting your alarm for 4am or something, and get him out then--he won't have to go as much first thing when you wake up--it will give you a minute to get him out there.
