You can start by keeping all plastic bags and other things (bottle rings, etc.) out of his reach. I had a cat who loved the plastic shopping bags with handles. There is something in the processing of them. They use some kind of animal oil. Anyway, he got his head stuck in it one time and was flying all over the house. Fortunately I was home. I keep anything plastic out of their reach. Obstructions can not only be costly but also dangerous.

My Katiebug also likes to eat plastic and anything else unedible she can manage to find on the floor. I haven't found any solution other than making sure that there isn't anything on the floor and when I see her chewing at something to get up and pry it out of her mouth. So far we have been lucky. But watch those twister ties from bread and rubber bands...both way evil.

All kitties like to eat something strange. Why? Ask me .

Juni likes elastic rubber bands. No more rubber bands in our apt.

My cats LOVE to eat things they shouldn't so we have to keep a careful eye out for them. For example, I was making a smoothie in the kitchen with my new smoothie maker I got from my bridal shower and I left the computer room door open. Well there just happens to be a balloon in there and when I came back in, half of the string was gone and there was a lovely pile of string puke on the ground next to it. I know it was Pumpkin that did it, in fact she is still vomiting the pieces up. She loves to eat string and plastic. All I have to say is thank god it comes up and doesn't cause a blockage!!

    chewing

Hi, my kitten (8 months) also chews on many things he shouldn't. He likes to chew on plastic bags - but we can keep those out of his reach. The problem is he also loves to chew on cables and there is no way to hide all of them. He is an indoor cat only and stays alone for about 8 hours (at least) a (working) day. We are also not sure what to do because he destroys those things he chews on but also can chew on a plugged-in cable.

I'll be happy to hear how to stop him. Good luck to everyone.

    Mougi..

    Welcome to Pet Talk.

Why don't you adopt a friend for your kitten. This should distract him from cables, as he'll have someone to play with.

Hello, thank you for welcoming me. I am happy I have "you" to discuss my furbaby with.

We live in an apartment and we really don't want any more cats. We love this one, but we got him to be my company when my husband travels. We don't want any more of them.
Have to find another way. But, thank you!

What about a cat tree next to a window. Maybe with a bird feeder outside. He will enjoy watching 'Cat TV'

    2 things.

mougi: Your kitty sounds bored, if you can't get him a friend then some toys may help.

As for the plastic eaters, perhaps grow some grass for them? I seem to recall being told that it helps them evict furballs, maybe since the plastic makes them vomit they've chosen it as a replacement?

    Cats and Cables

My cat also likes to chew on cables. She started as a kitten, she is now 6 years old and still does it, though not as much,(the vet said she was teething), and has cost me 2 answering machines and a lamp. I have noticed she does this most often when nervous, even though there is another cat in the household to play with. Wrapping cords in BLACK electrical tape does stop them, they don't like the taste. Also for computer cables and such, go to the hardware store and get the thick black covers for cables, not the cheap clear/thin ones you can buy at the computer store for "organizing your cables". The black electrical tape works the best, though it is time consuming. Do NOT use other colors, they are flavored differently. Hope this helps.

    chewing

    Hello again,

thanks to all of your advice. Siuox - my kitten - has a lot of toys. So I guess the best thing would be to wrap the cables we can't hide. We'll try that. I know about cat grass - he likes it and it helps him digest hair balls but I have to keep it away from him and just cut it and add it to his food because he loves to play with the dirt and would destroy the whole grass thing.
    Thanks again.
