    DuPage County, IL microchipping

The following is an article from our local paper and I thought it might be of interest to any Pet Talkers in the area. I think this is a great thing they're doing for pets. Unfortunately T & P don't live in DuPage county.

A lost pet with no identification is almost impossible to find. Statistics show that about 95 percent of the stray animals euthanized in U.S. animal shelters are euthanized because the holding agency cannot locate an owner. Whether by tag, microchip or tattoo, all dogs and cats must be provided with a form of identification.

In an effort to encourage pet owners to keep identification on their dogs and cats, the DuPage County Animal Control is hosting a microhipping clinic on Thursdays in March. DCAC will be microchipping dogs and cats for only $15.00.

The microchip is a permanent from of identification. It consists of a tiny capsule, about the size of a grain of rice, which is permanently injected just beneath the skin between the shoulder blades. The process is quick, safe, painless and requires no anesthesia. The unique number programmed into each chip can be read by passing a scanner over the back of the animal to obtain owner information.

DCAC’s microchip clinic will be held March 6, 13, 20 and 27. Appointments are required. All pet owners must bring in a rabies certificate from a veterinarian as proof of current vaccination to receive the chip. Call the DCAC at 630-682-7197 to make an appointment to have your dog or cat microchipped.

What a good idea! Kudos to the county!

Sadie and Cincy are both microchipped. It was $30 for each at the vet and then $12.50 to register each with AKC/Companion Animal Recovery.
