stubborn dog?

i know mickey knows his commands and he does them perfectly when i have a treat or toy with me, but if i don't have anything with me and i need him to "sit" "stay" or "come" he doesn't. i know this can be dangerous if he doesn't learn them. i don't know if he's being stubborn or if i should work on those commands more. will he grow out of this? any help would be great! thanks

MY DOG IS THE EXACT SAME WAY when she smells the treat she'll do ANYTHING but if there isnt we have a hard time

but try this i read it in a book>>> 1st tell your dog what to do if they dont repeat it, on the 3 try tell them and them put them in a sitting/standing/or whatever position

who knows i has helped my dog when she hears it and then is told what to do but DO NOT GIVE IN, SHE MIGHT NOT WANT TO SIT BUT YOU WANT HER TO AND THAT IS ALL THAT MATTERS if she gets up simply say"NO" not to sharp but get your point through then put her back like she was then if she was good give her a treat

Kito is the most stubborn dog in the world. Shibas are know for thier independence, and he shows it. He knows how to come, and sit and everything else, but does it when he wants to.
My only suggestion is to work on these commands in small time increments. Mickey probably doesn't have a huge attention span, so 5-10 minutes is probably enough.
I'm sure someone else on here can help you more though.

He's still young. His attention span is still probably not to high, I think if you work with him sometimes without treats he'll learn that way. I make mine do tricks sometimes without treats and and sometimes they get them. I know Jo used to NEVER listen to me when we were outside unless I had a treat. She'd rather run off and play, but I'm so amazed now, she listens so well outside now. Just keep working with him Maybe try doing it without sometimes and keep doing it till he does it, but maybe only a little at a time?

The idea of the treat is to fade it as soon as possible when training. After you believe the behavior is shaped and the dog understands then fade the treat to every couple of times you give the command at one practice session. Then every three times without and one with the treat and so on until the behavior is consistent either way! I guess it's leave them guessing when they get the treat!

thanks everyone! i never even really thought about making him do tricks without a treat. i do ask him to 'sit" every so often to get some practice out of it, but i'm going to be doing it a lot more. thanks
