    dog food

What kind of dog food do you feed your dog? Which do you think is the best for their health?

  2. #2
i really don't have my dog with me yet but when we went to buy a cage for him, the store gave us a free bag of vetdiet so i guess that's what we'll be using for awhile
also, the breeder says that once we pick up the dog, she gives us a bag of dog food as well. i think we'll continue to buy whatever it is she gives us

We feed our dogs Iams adult for our dogs, and we get Iams Large breed Puppy for our foster dog. Its good and many places have it. If I don't have time to run to a pet store for it, I can swing by Wally World (WalMart) and get it.
    Scott is owned by 5 cats: Jackson, Fluffy, Twidgit, Ashton, Lexi;
and 3 dogs: Eli, Sassee, Ginger

We feed our dogs Sensible choice Lamb and Rice.
Sadie is on the active adult and Cincy is on the reduced calorie (my little hunk-a-chunk!). We started on Iams Large Breed Puppy with Sadie, but Cincy is pretty sensitive to food and she didn't do well on it, so we switched to something a little higher quality (yet cheaper)

Louie is on Canidae. We were so happy with the results we put the cats on Felidae and has made a noticable difference in their health and coats.

I have enjoyed using California Natural (Reduced Calorie) for almost a year, and my girls have thrived. Unfortunately, the distributors are inconsistent and many times when my local feed store would order it, it wouldn't come in. This got so bad, I switched to Innova Senior, which he keeps in stock. Now, we're having the same problem with that one too! They are made by the same company.

So, we have converted to Bil Jac (not on your list), Reduced Calorie formula, and the girls love it!! It is a quality food, sort of expensive, but worth it.

We use Exclusive made by Purina Mills (NOT Purina Ralston). When Daisy was diagnosed with HOD (hyper trophic osteodystrophy) and they said that the experts think that it's diet related, Mike and I went on a mission to find the best that we could. Here's what we found...

    1. Iams/Eukanuba is owned by Proctor and Gamble and test their food on animals that they have been injured by THEM to see if they can survive on their food in renal or liver failure

    2. Most dog foods are made with the most disgusting things ever such as euthanized dogs and cats, chicken beaks, feet and feathers, road kill...I won't go on.

    3. Science Diet's main source of protein is ground peanut shells

    4. chicken by products or meal is the feet, beaks and feathers.

    5. The Exclusive turned out to the best choice since it's made with fresh chicken with no preservatives and no corn. It's chicken and rice or lamb and rice. All of the dogs we have are very healthy with thick shiny coats, no longer limp from HD, lost 45 pounds in Dudley's case.

    6. ALL major dog food brands are now owned by soap companies and all that that entails.

Keegan was on Diamond Premium Edge Chicken and Rice but then she kinda banned it and wouldn't eat it w/o wet food or BilJac in it, so I am switching her to Royal Canin Sensible Choice Lamb and Rice.
Royal Canin is a food I swear by. When My greyhound had grastritis and cholitis, the vet thought she was going to have to go on perscription food but I put her on R.C holistic blend and she thrived!!! So I wanted Keegan on it too. So I am slowly making the switch and with a little bit of the lamb and rice in it she cleaned her bowl twice. Before she wouldn't eat for a couple days! I bought a 40# bag of food in July and am just finishing it up now!! That isn't alot of food for a growing golden!!

Nebo gets Nutro Natural Choice large breed puppy.

Smokey and Reggie get whatever food my parents decide to buy, as I do not buy their dog food.

Lady (friend's dog) was on the same food as Nebo, but lately she's been having skin problems that could be food related. She's going to try the Nutro lamb and rice puppy, hopefully it will help.

Eeek, I dont like any of the foods on the list My dogs are on Innova, which is hard to find but high quality. I may have to switch to California Natural because of Reece's allergies. I'm not sure if they're food related or not though. My foster eats prescription food for her heart condition.

The only reason they were on "senior" food, Aly, was because Innova doesn't have a reduced calorie formula, which both Murphy and Lilly need. Of course, Murphy is a senior (almost 13).. Now they are back to a reduced calorie formula. Can't be having Miss Lilly getting fat.

Star and Cody, in the past, have been on Calif. Natural, Wysong and Innova. My vet suggested Soid Gold, a premium hoisitic brand after Cody was diagnosed with HD and the girls love it. Their coats have never looked or felt better. It contains no ground or milled corn or wheat, (lamb is the primary ingredient) along with brown rice, barley, flax seed oil, omega 3 fish oils, menhaden (herring) amaranth, spirulina etc. In addition I add raw fruits and veggies and 1 TBSP. fat free yogurt or cottage cheese per meal.

I played around with the idea of trying the BARF and modified BARF diet but decided against it.

Staci, my kitties are on Royal Canin and now won't eat anything but. I tried them on Innova for a while but they turned their nose up at all the fruits and veggies!

    Star,Tigg'r , Mollie and the10 Gallon Gang!

And my Rainbow Bridge Furangels...Jingles, Cody, Fritz, Chessa, Satin, Buddy, Lizzie, Oliver, Squeaker, Moonbeam, Rosie, Ruby~

There are several more just go to the search icon and put in food, or dog food and see what comes up. Lots!!

I am currently switching Keegan from Diamond Premium Edge Chicken and Rice to Sensible Choice Lamb and Rice. I know that Amy (Cincy'sMom) and her mom feed their dogs that, and I really wanted Keegan on a Lamb and rice diet.
I mixed it with her old food, but she still got diarrhea on Wed night. All over her crate, poor baby. I had to give her a bath at midnight! And she also had the squirts Sunday morning also. I also that it might be the rawhide chips I had been giving her so I pitched them. She seems to be doing better. I fixed some boiled chicken, rice and frozen bil-jac for her and she ate that really well and did ok from Thurs to Sunday. I don't know. Some dogs are fine with switching of foods but the 2 I have had had senisitive stomachs apparently!!! And so does the cat. That is why she is on Royal Canin and is gonna stay their. Not switching her food for nuttin!!! If I have to get another job to be able to afford it for her so be it!! But we aren't at that point yet!!
