I am just at wits end, I don't know what to think. I don't mean to pretend to know more than the vets, but I swear that Callie's eyes just do not look the same as the other cats, I (and my mother too) really have a hard time believing that she has the herpes virus. her eyes are sore and scabby underneath, like where a woman would put eyeliner. I don't know if it is allergies or what!! all the vet says is it doesn't matter what it is the meds will help it. but I want to know what it is. Im so sick of vets that take great care of one cat then flake out on you!
has anyone else ever had a cat with this? terramycin makes her eyes swell up, so I hate to use it...
and when she is first awake her eyes are swoolen up then they get better. she rubs her eyes, and just now she got the collar off!

any help would be appreciated

I know that it can be frustrating when an answer is not forthcoming, but sometimes it is hit or miss. I do not have experience with eye problems with my cats, knock on wood, but here is what I would do. First, mention that the ointment seems to be doing more harm than good and ask if there is an alternative. Second, and this may not be possible (I do not know the area around which you live ) but a second opinion may be in order. People's hunches can be very helpful in determining the problem, and since you've had experience with the herpes virus and you know your cats better than any vet, if you believe it is something else, then you should follow up on that hunch. Could the cat be allergic to terramycin? Maybe the vet can tell you.

I would get a second opinion. Alot of times one vet can see what the other vet seems to be overlooking. Just a suggestion. Good luck!

Like I told you, MooShoo has the herpes virus in his eyes and is on eye DROPS not ointment. The drops really make his one good eye look clear (I actually now know what color it is...GREEN!!!

Mary, I am no expert on eye problems with cats, but have you tried (a human brand of) eye-wash? I have used terramycin on some of my kittens, but that is for a disease that is apparently different than what you are describing. Do you have a "cat book" that discusses, or have you surfed the internet looking under cat, medical problems?

PBS programming also has a pet-call in program (I think) on KUAT (AM, 1550 khz)), in Tucson, on Sunday mornings. Here, it is on at 10 AM on KRPS from Pittsburg, Ks. You might check this out.

I just got back from looking over some cat eye diseases. One possibility is that she has uveitis. If you go to Google search engine and type in "cat eye diseases" they show on several sites, some symptoms and their identification. I hope this helps.

thanks. I think it will be ok. Callie's eyes look a little better tonight, so hopefully they will be better yet in the morning.

When bastet had her infection of the herpes virus, they looked exactly like the way you described it TC. The vet said the best thing for her was Zovirax twice a day - the cream -spread liberally on the eyes and then an elizabethan collar for an hour or so - thats so she couldn't lick it off.

It does get better - the worst thing though is for your kitty to go out into the garden in long grass with eyes like that but sunlight helps heaps too!

thanks... I will have to look into the med you mentioned, never heard of it. but, no chance of grass here! desert area! anyway they don't go outside. Muffin used to but I stopped taking her out.

I just realized terramycin is an antibiotic, works on bacteria. It won't touch a virus (although it may prevent secondary infections.)

My only suggestion would be to take her to another vet...you could even call some other vets in your area and ask if they are familiar with eye problems.

I'm sorry it wont go away....poor baby.
