I'll take world geography for $200, Alex...

With all the news about the difficult situation in Egypt, I've discovered how little I know about world cultures and geography! The CIA.gov Web site has a page called World Fact Book that with maps and descriptions of the world's countries. Outside of North America I am definitely geographically challenged!

Also... Mooshi mentioned being on vacation in the Maldives Islands -- guess who had no idea where the Maldives Islands are located? That would be me. But I know now (thanks, Google). I don't guess I'll ever visit the Maldives in my life but from the pictures I saw on the Web, it looks like a beautiful place. I'll have to start looking at the world news and the travel sections of the Sunday paper to get a better handle on places. When they say "think global" maybe this is what they mean.

Here's a good game I do from time to time:

    Countries of Europe

to remind myself where some of the smaller countries of Europe are. Usually on the first time through I mess up something in the Balkans region, even still. But they have similar games for other areas of the world, too!

Oh and here's the CIA World Factbook.

Wow! I haven't been in a geography class since 8th grade and that was quite some time ago. I'll definitely check that out.

Elyse, do you think we should keep this from Cassie, Pinot, and Groucho? They might get ideas for another Catmobile getaway.

I saw this story about Tunisia on 60 Minutes last night. I had to go to a map of the world to find Tunisia It's on the northern shore of Africa, on the Mediterranean, with Morocco and Egypt. I do know that part of the first "Star Wars" movie was filmed there (the aunt and uncle's home and the scene where Luke is flying his land speeder- that's Tunisia). I don't know my geography very well!

Don't feel too bad. I was a corporate travel agent for over 30 years and STILL had to get a map out in order to route people the proper way. And I've been to a lot of them too! I used to say if it was Tuesday, it must be France!.

Here's some Star Wars trivia: The planet Tatooine got its name from a real place: Foum Tatouine (sp?) in Tunisia, which is (I believe) where the Tatooine scenes were filmed!
