Who is your Poppy? Thursday #375

We have not had a road trip in a while..

I'll pull the bus around and load up the bus.

    Sub sandwiches and box wine?

MY fave place this time of year.

Beeeeautiful place, that Poppy Reserve. Been away from work for 5 days and today is my first day back so a road trip is definately in order.

What kinda subs? Can I have a diet coke (very cold) instead of wine?

Do they sell Poppy-related items at the reserve?

Just look out for the Wicked Witch of the West! I need some strong coffee. I got a blend from Bear Mountain Roasters called "Wakeup Call" which is REALLY good.

Hee hee!! "Poppies will make them sleeeeeep! Sleeeeeeep!"

Your Wake Up Call coffee might have done the trick to wake them up and then the good witch wouldn't have had to make it snow. . .

    From 2001:

A year ago we were there,
Driving through the hills of Marin county
    Winding through April-green hills
On twisting roads with breathtaking views
    Swallowed by the next valley,
But revealed anew with another twisting climb

There we were, standing on the hills
    Looking across at San Francisco,
Cleaner and neater from across the bay
As we posed for pictures, windswept and chilly
Admiring the blue of the bay, and colors of the city

Muir woods were a treasure, and emerald gem
Tucked into the hills, how could such magnificence
Be so well hidden by the terrain
That mankind thought before plowing them over
Damp, dark woods, neck-strainingly immense trees
    Slow time-travelers, witness to generations
I wonder what they think of flash cameras
When we stand in their shelter
For pictures that cannot hope to convey the majesty
    Just the memory

And everywhere we traveled in the California sunshine
Poppies blossomed with a velvet sun-silk petals
Wild on the roadside like their own goldrush
    Curling up, when shadows come
Like we, sheltering in a hotel room, sleep

Then the drive down the California coast
Famous highway of every movie, and south and more south still.
Again the heart-stopping vistas, and sunshine-silk road trim
So green the hills, fairytale green and rounded
Then the road curves coastward again
Dusk then darkness come as we find the secret place we seek
    Known world-wide in certain seal-circles
But easy to miss from the road

Early California morning, we drive, in quiet
And after parking in the paved lot, commence the hike
Through wild California-kind of flat emptyish fullness
We hike miles through low, flat brush, avoiding poison oak
And hearing skittering life hiding in the wind-blown scrub
Stopping to marvel now and again
That such a populous place was wise enough
To value peace and see the unglamorous beauty and save it.

Quietly, finally, we come to the rope
And come across the elephant seals, dozing, sleeping
In the good patch of sand just across a gully from us
And marvel at them, as they mostly ignore us
They have species-old tasks to attend to, sleeping mostly
And our hushed whispers don't dare interrupt

And on and on I could write, but the peace and beauty
    Of California in early April
(not yet brown and dry as I'm told it will become
but not for me, ever green it stays in my heart)
Such different nature, and air, and even the weeds are California pretty
And the peace and a few purloined pebbles
    Stay with me, even now.
