Cookie continues to cry out.

Cookie continues to cry out at all times of the day and night while inside the house even at night (especially when I am awake). At first I thought she was in '"false heat" - because she is spayed. But after returning from Tucson, Ariz. the crying goes on. If I call her she will be quiet for a while, or if I let her outside she is quiet. But otherwise, she wanders around the house crying out -not all the time, but enough to cause me to wonder at it all. She will often talk to me after calling at her, or at least she will mimic my words. At night I have gotten her to sleep with me on the bed, and she is queit then . Does anyone have any ideas about this behavior?

My boys rarely make a sound. The only time I've heard Hobbes is when he's out of sight. I think it's literally his way of calling me. For example, when I'm in the living room watching TV and he's in the kitchen, he'll make a small meow and I'll come over to make sure he's got food/water and that he's okay. That seems to please him immensely. For my kids it seems to be just their way of saying "HEY, pay attention to me!" Once I acknowledge them and pick them up for cuddles the house is silent for the night.

How old is Cookie?
Has she always done this, or is it a new behavior?
What breed is she? Could she just be one of the more talkative breeds?
The first thing I'd say, even without the info, is that she likes your attention(sleeping quietly on the bed)

thanks for your responses, Kitten645, you brought out some ideas that I had not though of.

Jen. Cookie is about 2 1/2 years old. she is a DSH being a silver/tan tortie. Also she has one bad eye, but apparently she can see something with it though. This meowing at all times of the day and night is relatively new. Actually is started late last year, and has continued until this day. it is as you have stated, that this behavior is centered somehow on me, because when I call her she stops the loud meowing for some interval of time. What has me perplexed about the whole affair is that she wanders around the house ,as though she is looking for me or something else.

My oldest male will also do that-meowning throughout the house until I call him. And then when I call him and snap my fingers he comes to me and I plop him on my lap.

When Cookie does this, is she in a playful mood? Is she normally a talker outside of this? If you play with her for a while (read: tire her out) does she stop?

Noel, our tortie does the same thing. Last night she was very, very vocal. When I played with her, she stopped. When Noel does this, it seems like she just wants attention and to play.
But, like I said, she does stop after a while. Does Cookie?

My 2-year old neutered male, Quincy, likes to do this - he is very loud when he comes home and you would think that someone is stepping on his tail with the noise he makes. Once he gets our attention, he is just as happy as can be and he quiets down. He isn't really very vocal otherwise.

He has been like this since he was a tiny kitten so I think its just a personality trait of his.

(well, we do encourage the loud meows because its so entertaining)

Cookie's eye sight could be going down hill. So it may be more difficult for her to know where you are now, than it was before. Or maybe she simply doesn't understand why she can't see as well as before and it is frightening. Being so young, I rule out senility. (which does happen). Has another cat come into the house hold around the time of the extra "meowing"? If so, she might be feeling "left out".She may just have figured out how to get your attention.

Jen, thanks for your input. Cookie's eye does appear to be better than it was last year (after prayer). At least it is beginning to turn yellow, like the other one. If I hold something up to the left of her left eye (the problematical one), she immediately responds. From this, I know that she can see somewhat with it.

The analysis of this meowing being a personality trait, appears to be the correct one. Now, last night, she was totally quiet -not a peep from her. When I got up this morning the weather had turned cooler. Perhaps this has something to do with it. Perhaps I do not give her enough attention. From yesterday she has began to curl up in my lap more often.

Ater12 days of monitoring her meowing, I have come to the conclusion that she is lonely and wants some attention. I have been making it a common activity to call her when she begins her loud meowing. Also, that when she starts in meowing, that if I can, will go and pick her up and make her a lap kitty. This is apparently what she has been wanting all along. Sometimes, I am a little slow at figuring out what my firkids want.

Good for Cookie. She will probably be a lot happier knowing that her cries will be answered now. Sometimes it is difficult to figure out EXACTLY what it is that they want. She sound like a real sweetie!

Cookie was a very tiny cat, but now she has all of a sudden grown into a medium sized furkid, and she did this only in the last few months. She is about 2 year old.

MY Fern, and my Brighteyes (RB) did that. They were petite, but some how filled in, with time. Not big like the boys though!!
Cookie sounds like a sweet heart.
Actually, now that I think of it, Fern tends to cry when she wants me to pet her. She does not do it all the time, just about twice a day, but I always know that she is ready for her "pets" when she "squeaks"

Wayne, since you say she was a small cat, and is now a medium sized one, maybe she was experiencing 'growing pains'...and that was why she was soooo noisy. Or, she knows the sqeaky one gets the grease! Sounds like a real charmer, in either event. Glad things have quieted down for you...

Cataholic, I had never thought of that! She did become much larger since I moved to Kansas. Perhaps she was in pain because of her late and rapid growth, and wanted me to comfort her. Also, now that the weather has cooled off, she has not cried near as much. Maybe that had something to do with it.
