barking puppy

Hello
I am the brand new owner of the sweetest most darling little puppy. He is a nine week old Yorkshire terrier. I've had him for one week tonight. I am totally in love with him but I haven't slept a single night since I brought him him home. I've tried slapping a paper against my hand, squirting him with a water gun, putting my hand around his muzzle but nothing helps! The real problem is that my my boyfriend, who was sceptical about the pup from the begging, is starting to get a bit irritated! Do you guys have any tips for me?

Hi Peanut_love, Welcome to Pet talk!! Is it that he barks all night long? Does he get plenty of exercise during the day? Does he sleep all day long while you are at work? Is he in the same room with you? And lastly, do you know what might be the cause of his barking?

Yes we need more info here! lol. It is normal for a puppy to bark and cry at night. My puppy did. It is best (in my opinion) to have the pup sleep in the same room with you. Possibly in a crate close to the bed, so you can reach your hand down to let the pup know you are there. The pup could be crying to be let out to go potty too, as young pups certainly cannot hold it for long! You might have to take a few middle-of-the-night trips outside for potty time.

I agree puppies need to go outside alot! Just like having a baby, you need to get up in the middle of the night! Also your pup may be lonley if he's by himself...taken away from the litter is very hard for the first little bit! They are not use to being alone.

Also maybe leave a radio on low or have a ticking clock near him. Being a pup especially a terrier barking is deffinetly normal. Try to figure out why he is barking then try to solve that problem.

Hello Everyone!
I guess I didn't give enough info about my puppy. Peanut gets at least three walks a day for at least an hour each time. He is never at home by himself as my boyfriend works out of our house and he barks most of the evening as well ( i work evening shifts at work). If I had it my way Peanut would sleep with bed with me everynight unfourtunatly my boyfriend insists that he sleep in the kitchen. I have been sleeping in the kitchen with him the past few nights but this does not seem like a reasonable solution. I just don't want him to get used to getting what he wants by barking, but is ignoring him a good solution?

Three one hour walks per day?? He's probably barking because of aching muscles. j/k

Since he is by himself in the kitchen that is probably why he is barking. Dogs are pack animals and like to be with their "pack" (in other words YOU). If he is crate trained, is it feasible to have the crate in the same room with you, or out in a hall where he can at least see you? A ticking clock wrapped in a towel near him is an excellent idea! It really worked with Malone and helped put him to sleep those first few days. It mimics the mother's heartbeat and makes them feel a little bit less lonely.

But hang in there...the first few weeks are the hardest as they settle into new surroundings. As he gets used to it, he will hopefully become happier.

Sorry, I guess I missed this, but, does he bark/cry or whatever when you put him to bed, or when he's outside? My dog Josie used to whine everymorning when we kept her in the kitchen. I think she was wanting attention for me to get up. I think maybe it's sort of like a child who had a tantrum looking for attention, if you give it to him, he'll keep doing it.
If it's outside he's barking, you should find out what it is he's barking at, and try distracting him when till the distraction is gone..maybe it will teach him to ignore the distrctions..

Your puppy is barking because barking gets things to happen!

There comes a time in a pups life when it has to learn to take it's place. This is difficult and the quicker the better for the pup....do you want a pup that settles to sleep quickly and gets good rest or do you want a pup that never has a night's sleep because it knows that if it creates enough noise it will have a get some company?
The pup that sleeps learns to trust the leader - the leader is trustworthy and capable, this pup feels safe and is secure and confident.
The pup that gets the company learns that the leader is also afraid of the dark, has no confidence that they can keep the pup safe and is relying on the "puppy" to make it feel better. The pup then becomes less confident in the leader of it's new pack...........

I put him to sleep in the kitchen at night when I go to bed and then he wakes up at around 5:30 or 6:00 and I bring him to bed with me then. I have been doing this for about a week. Do you think he already thinks this way? Should I just let him cry in the mornings?

By him whining, and you going right down and taking him to your bed, it shows him, like carrie said, that if he whines, then he gets to sleep in your room, which is what he wants...just like a human child
