What should I do about this?

Someone please help me! There were 2 stray dogs (lab-retreiver? and a terrier?) running with no tags, lots of burrs in their fur, not starved (they didn't eat alot when I fed them). We got both of them & put them in the yard (the lab-we put in the kennel & the little one we left out with Roxey & Huney. Today is Sunday so the shelter won't take them, nor tomorrow since it's a holdiay I looked for no kill shelters in our area, but there is none. They are all around 100 miles or so away & these dogs seem like they are someones pets. I just don't know what I should do. Angus is going nuts, so we've tried leaving him in the house, but he still keeps pacing.
    Please, anyone got any ideas?!

We've been there done that one!!

    1. Call the shelter and see if anyone has reported them missing, and if not make a found dog report.

    2. Call the vets in the area and see if they know anything.

    3. Put an ad in the paper for found dogs.

    4. Put up fliers in the area saying found dog...please call...

    5. Ask neighbors if they know the dogs.

    Good luck!!!

do you have a relative or a friend that can keep the dogs for a few days? put and ad in the paper and/or post flyers around the area where you found them. could they maybe have those microchips? a vet could check. since tomorrow is a holiday you will have to wait til Tuesday, I don't know what to tell you, is it possible for you to keep them in your garage?

These ideas sound good, Anna. Is there anyone you know that can keep the dogs until Tuesday, so Angus won't wear a hole in your carpet?
I hope you find something. Where is Mugsy???????

I would call the local police, see if they have heard anything - if shlters and vets aren't opne, maybe someone called them? Maybe, depending on how many roads are in your area, take them for a ride and see if they react at a certain house? I'd go today and put "found dogs" notice up at any supermarket or conveniece store that's open. Don't put a lot of detail, just enough so tht you can be sure whoever calls really is their owner. Bless you for keeping them safe for now.

Poor Angus, it'll be okay soon ...

I'd call a vet and see if they could get for those microchips. If it is a Lab- there is a strong chance of having a microchip in it, since they are popular pets, popualr breed, etc . I'd might also put an ad in the local newspaper, and put flyers in big stores (target, k-mart, grocery stores etc.) I hope they find their owners or a nice new home. Keep us updated. Good luck.

Well, we went to all of the houses within a couple of miles around our house, & no luck. Noone had ever seen these dogs before, we even asked people who had lived in this area for 40 years & knew almost everyone around. Everyone I talked to said the same thing, they were probably dumped. I printed out flyers & gave them out, but I just don't hold very much hope for these two.
Right now we have the little one in the house (he's just a pup-he still has little sharp puppy teeth and he can't even chew our dogs food. ) with our dogs. Surprisingly Angus isn't bothering him, maybe because he is just a pup & doesn't threaten him. And we have the other one out in the yard (he's already run into the electric fence ). Angus still can't stand it!
Oh, did I tell you we called the police, they were no help. Also the shelter woman called us back. Listen to what she said, just let them back out and maybe they'll go home! Can you believe that?! What an idiot. The road is busy & surely they would get hit. I just can't believe she would say that. I just don't know about people.
Here's a couple pics of the two of them

What kind of dogs are they, I'm just not really sure. I should, but I don't.

Oh Anna, poor pups! And what an awesome responsibility you have taken on. I can't believe the shelter person actually said, "Let them out!!" Is she for real???????? The doggies are so sweet looking! Poor babies! The retriever looks like a Golden, Golden/mix to me. The little guy maybe a Lasa, Terrier mix??? Everyone's already given you great advice and suggestions re: finding the owners. I'm guessing there aren't any "no kill" shelters in your area? I'd start looking for all breed rescue groups in your area n the internet. And Petfinder has a great "classified ad" section. I pray they find their home. But I'm thinking too they were probably abandoned. How sad. Thank you SO much for helping them. I'll be praying the outcome is a happy one.

Nope, there are no "no-kill" shelters close. They are all about 100 miles away. I talked to a golden rescue group & they said to take him to the animal shelter. That way if the owners are looking, they would have a much better chance of finding him. There is a shelter that has a drop off in the next county (only about 10 miles away). So I think we are going to take him down there tonight
I guess this would be best, if we were looking for our dogs & someone had dropped them off at the shelter it would be easier for us to find them there than if someone had them at their house, right? I just feel so bad about doing it though.
If we have him in the kennel, the dogs keep fighting through the fence. Even Huney & Roxey get in on it now. It's just not a good situation with him here. I'm afraid the police will be called because of the noise.
I will call the shelter Tuesday & see what is going on with him. I just don't want him to be put to sleep, he is such a fun guy. He loves to play ball (surprise, right ) I don't think he's used to being in the house, the first thing he did was pee on my chair
Anna, I wish you did live close enough, he's such a sweetheart.
I'll keep you all informed on what happens with the guy.
For now, we're going to keep the little guy. Maybe we can find him a good home. I think I'll let the shelters know we have him. That way if anyone is looking, they can contact us.
    Thanks for the input.

Anna, thanks so much for caring about these dogs.

When you drop the Golden/mix? off at the kill shelter, be sure to ask their policy on how soon they kill the dogs. You said you didn't want him to be killed. Be sure that they know that and be sure to follow up on him. Which shelter is it? Good luck!

    Are you near Port Clinton?

They are just too precious!!!! I love the lab/golden mix. He looks so gentle. And the little one looks like a scruffy ball of fun!!

Sue, no Anna isn't near Port Clinton. I am about 1 hour and 15 min from Port Clinton. And Anna is about 1 and a half to 2 hours from me. Is there a rescue there?

Good Luck Anna! I am glad you found them!

It's a shelter in Sidney, Ohio (shelby county). I am going to call about him Tuesday & tell them his temperment and all. He seems like he would be good for a family with no other dogs, maybe a good farm dog. When we went to drop him off there was another family there dropping a GSD off & he tried to attack him. I feel so bad leaving him there. I'm glad at least that our dogs are getting along with the little guy. I gave him a bath tonight and he was sooo good! He didn't even mind the blow drier. He seems like a great dog. I really want him to go to a good home. If we didn't already have three I wouldn't mind keeping him He had some big burrs in his whiskers around his mouth, and Mark held him & he let me cut them out with no problem.
We set the kennel up & guess who wanted to sleep in there? Roxey! She isn't too sure about him, but Angus seems to really like him! He was bring his stuffies to play with, even his favorite hedgehog! I'll try to get a few more pics of him up tomorrow. It's been a stressful day for everyone today. Goodnight!

The Humane Society of Ottawa County is supposed to be a no-kill facility. http://www.petfinder.org/shelters/OH187.html

    Good luck!
