Calgary has opened a new clinic where cats and dogs up for adoption will be spayed and neutered.

The 2,500-square-foot building, which opened Wednesday morning, is adjacent to the Animal Services Centre on Portland Street S.E.

"As we prepare them for adoption, they … almost always need the spay and neuter, maybe a very minor surgery, or some dental cleaning," said Bill Bruce, director of animal and bylaw services.

"In the past we've had to send that out to clinics as we didn't have a vet. Now we can do all of those services in house, so we could provide faster, better services. In the end we'll save more animals."

By 2010 the clinic, along with partners such as the University of Calgary's veterinary medicine faculty and the Calgary Humane Society, will also provide free spay and neuter surgeries to the pets of low-income Calgarians.

Bruce said the clinic will help reduce the number of unwanted animals in city shelters.

Funding for the clinic comes from controversial cat licensing revenue.

That's great news. And now they can spay and neuter all the pets before adopting them out.

Yes, Pat! And I met with Bill Bruce earlier in the year on another matter, and he said many of the poorer people in the city are more than willing to spay and neuter their cats...but they have no transportation.

So, they have a great mobile system worked out, which is likely what will come into play then. A morning vehicle will take kitties in for their spay; they are taken home and the next batch is picked up in the afternoon.

Obviously, they will not return kitties who need more time to heal...but there is a plan for this, in any case.

That is fantastic, that they've also worked out a transportation plan.

All the VERY best to them!

Thatsa very good idea as the chain of unwanted Kittens is a growing problem, with the sad story of Mom of Furry Fcaesstill fresh in our memory.
We have to stop this chain of Cats that noone wants, and spare them being stray ,cold and hungry.
The Animal Welfare has advocated that for yeras , its a very good idea , and a humane one too!!
