Muskwa tried to eat a porcupine :(

I copied this from the thread called "Lynx" in General:

Unfortunately, this is not Muskwa's first porcupine encounter, more like his 10th. It is unlikely to be his last. Porcupines from some reason thrive in the North!

The quills are all out now, I think. They do have a tendancy to pop out days, even weeks later. He's moving slowly, but I think he's just sore. He ate tonight(he didn't last night).

Muskwa is the smartest dog I've ever met, about everything, except porkies!

    TEN previous Porkie Encounters?

I'd think anything "smarter" than a STONE would have learned to avoid
a Quilled Creature after TEN run-ins!

    Does he need glasses?

My vet swears that if he sees a dog twice for quills, he will see them a third, fourth..... If a dog doesn't learn the first time, they won't. Unfortunately, avoiding porkies is pretty tricky up here...we've had them right at the fence line and my neighbor's dog got a facefull of quills while confined in his own yard!

Good thing you guys were prepared. Do you always take pliers?

When we were at our cabin last year, I guy came running up the trail asking for pliers. His dogger had a snootfull of quills too. Well, we had 3 (sets?) of pliers, so all 3 of us got to work. Poor pupper was not feeling well at all. We recommended he take the dog into town to the vet, but not sure if he ever did.
Ask your vet about microchipping. ~ It could have saved Kuhio's life.

Always. Even if I'm only going to the lake behind the house, I have pliers with me. Some of the dogs aren't as cooperative with pulling the quills as Muskwa, but I always have the tools to do it! It was a fluke that I had a pain pill with me. I meant to give it to Goldie before I left the yard, but I forgot it in my pocket. It worked out though as Muskwa probably needed it more than Goldie!

If he's still limping in a couple days, I'll take him to the vet. He's probably due for an "old dog" check up anyway.

Awww, poor Muskwa! Gonzo sympathizes. He got sprayed by his umpteenth skunk a few weeks ago... for the third time this year alone!!!! That is an unbelievable PITA, so I can only imagine how scary/annoying/painful it is to get stuck with 100 quills.

The meanies don't understand that you sweet boys just want to cuddle with them. Right, right?

I am eternally grateful that we don't have any skunks in the Yukon. My dogs would be stinky all the time!!
