Palin has plenty in the bank: financial records

    2 hours, 7 minutes ago

FLAGSTAFF, Arizona (AFP) - Sarah Palin, who regularly tells voters she knows what it is like to struggle to pay the bills, earns nearly 200,000 and has substantial savings, according to records released by the Republican vice presidential hopeful's campaign Friday.

Palin, who took office as governor of Alaska in December 2006, reported a gross household income of 166,495 in her 2007 taxes.

Her financial disclosure report to the office of government ethics showed her income to be 196,531.50 this year and did not list how much her husband earned working in the oilfields or as a commercial fisherman.

The couple's 2007 taxes showed Todd's fishing business brought in about 50,000 dollars, more than half of which went to paying expenses.

His snowmachine racing also earned him about 17,000 in 2007 but he spent nearly 10,000 more than that on equipment and other related expenses.

They had a taxable income of 124,921 in 2007.

The couple claimed eight investment funds with a value of between 15,001 and 50,000 dollars and seven others valued at between 1,001 and 15,000 in a financial disclosure report.

Todd Palin also had a retirement fund through work valued at between 50,001 and 100,000 while Sarah Palin's two pensions from her work as the Governor of Alaska and mayor of Wasilla were also valued in that range.

Their home was valued at between 500,001 and a million dollars, and they also have a partial interest in two parcels of land and own a fishing leasehold.

Todd Palin claimed three vehicles which were used for business purposes: a 1992 truck, a 1975 Ford and a 2006 Dodge.

Palin, who insists that taxes must be lowered to help stimulate the economy and put more money into the pockets of families, paid 24,738 last year on her family's adjusted gross income of 166,080: a 14.3 percent tax rate.

For 2006, the Palins paid 11,944 in total taxes on gross income of 127,869 dollars, which is a 9.3 percent tax rate.

The family donated 1.5 percent of their income to charity in 2007, of which 2,500 dollars was cash and 825 dollars was household goods donated to the Salvation Army.

This was down from the 3.3 percent of their adjusted gross income donated in 2006, of which 4,250 was cash and 630 dollars was household goods.

Is that all the money she has no wonder she is struggling to pay her bills?
Wonder what she really thinks of McCain's health care ideas. Lets see how much it would cost her to buy health insurance for her family with a handicapped child and a pregnant daughter if the government wasn't footing the bill for both.

    and this means what?

Obama also claims to know what the lower and middle class are going through but I am willing to bet that he also makes a substantial amount now.

I'm not going to hold success against any of the candidates

I don't know... we make a lot less than that and we are able to provide health insurance, a home, food, clothing and a little extra left over for fun.

I think we need to STOP holding SUCCESS against people. Don't we WANT the people of America to SUCCEED?

If Ms. Palin DOES understand the struggles of broke people, she had better back that up. We KNOW Obama grew up in a single-parent household that wasn't the richest in the country. Maybe Palin did too, but she better mention it.

It's not her SUCCESS, sparks - it's her apparent LYING that is the issue.

Marigold, I hear your sarcasm loud and clear, and good for you! She could afford anything without the government footing the bill. She's UNDERSTANDS what it's like to be broke, right?

Gosh! The emperor...or empress in this case...has no clothes! (Although that is rather inaccurate as the woman wears suits and shoes that cost a real pretty penny! I assume the campaign fund pays for those...)

Which is more amusing? Her 9% tax rate or the pitiful 1.5% charitable contribution? But is does explain the scorn she expressed in her convention speech for community activist!

The article quoted above does not include her refusal to pay taxes on money the state of Alaska gives her when she works from home. Gosh, if she paid taxes on that she might be up to 10%!

So someone who has been at the public trough for how many years...gettin' paid with tax dollars

I suppose her more ardent supporters will fall back on ad hominem attacks.

YOu have to be a bitter lefty woman to be able to get away with it.

And the empress would look pretty darn good in the buff. I can tell!

    -----------

Somehow, SP only dropped onto the planet in 2006.

We all start out naked and covered with blood, mucus and crying up a storm.
YOu don't show up on the planet 40 years old with 200k in the bank.

Of course, some women do chart their futures by marrying a rich guy and taking advantage of some rich AH. Some women go out and do a hard day's work.

Todd hit the jackpot, he married abroad (LOL, is ALaska overseas?) a woman that is good looking, successful and carries a big stick.

So she worked for her money. I am sure no one walked up to her and handed her a check for 195k and change for nothing. she had to start some place and work her way up. Much like most of us.

I get a yearly statement from the government that tells me how much I earned since I started working when I got out of school, it shows a progressive increase year after year.

Do you think that the author of the article might have overlooked the fact that SP gets one too? If so, why didn't they reference that?

I can see the street from my front door.

If Obama has been in the lower and middle class it would make sense that he knows what they want and need.

  12. And so the apologist speaks!

I have not heard anyone complain how much Ms. Palin makes.

It is not like she married someone really, really rich....as her running mate did.

I assume she earned her money...albeit all from tax dollars! Certainly government workers are deserving of the pay they make.

In a state with a relatively high PCPI of $50,746 - she is still doing alright.

And when this is over she will write a book and go on the rubber chicken circuit and really make some money.

But gosh darn it! I don't think when you are makin' a few multiples of the state's average wage you ought to be braggin' 'bout your empathy with those who are strugglin'.

And gosh darn it! I would think at that income level and with the hockey team and the church and all, she could do better than 1.5%!

But gosh darn it! Don't be a hypocrite!

and how do you know Sarah Palin hasn't? She was one of four children and her mother was a school secretary and her father was a teacher. Now I don't know about where you are but teachers and secretaries aren't exactly raking in the dough and I can't imagine they were making MORE back then.

Plus with her 90% (give or take) approval rating in a State that isn't known for individual wealth ... perhaps listening to her people HAS given her an idea of what the middle class want or need.

It seems that just because she makes a good living now means that she doesn't understand the middle class.

I never said she wasn't. I've never made any claims regarding any persons. You said something about Person A and I gave a response on Person A. I was not aware that I, also, had to bring in something about Person B considering that the statement wasn't even about them. I was pointing something out. Just because I didn't jump up and shout "oh and by the way, so and so did this, has this, was there, etc" No need to get defensive twist words around. I wish that I could say something without being pinned to something or slapped with a label.

LOL what? You quoted my post which was intended to be about both parties so I assumed (and you know what they say about assuming) you were talking about both parties also. My point was that we know Obama didn't grow up rolling in dough but he makes a heck of a living now but no one questions that and they shouldn't. he has every right to be successful and NOT be condemned for it. But Palin also didn't grow up rolling in dough but she couldnt' POSSIBLY know about the plight of the middle class because she makes good money now... and she also has every right to be successful. That was the point of my post so I figured if you were responding to it that you meant that he knows about the lower middle class because he has been there and Sarah Palin hasn't.

Sorry if responding to your post meant I was slapping you with a label lol
