    Puppy Help

    Hi all,

I have an eight week old standard dachshund puppy (Henry). This is my first really really little puppy. (I adopted my other dog when she was six months old.)

My question is, what is the best way to settle him at night? He is in a crate at night because I have cats as well and it just seems to keep him safe. He likes his crate and gets treats and takes his toys in there.

He is a stubborn little whiner, cryer, groaner (the groans are like those of a little ol' man lol).

I've only had him three nights, but he cries at least once an hour before he settles again. I play with him a lot at night before bed.

This will get better, right? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Should I just ignore him? That's what I've been doing.

    Thanks!

My puppy gets really anxious at night (it's like she's fighting bedtime) and will run circles in the yard if I take her outside. If she's inside, she annoys everyone (mostly Moon, the cat) with her anxious energy. Eventually, she settles down and sleeps until we go to bed. I think all puppies have extra energy at night. Good luck

Yes, it will get better. What you are doing is exactly right, ignore him. The first few nights are bound to be sleep deprived with a new puppy, but it will pay off in the end. Is his crate in your bedroom? Is it in a position where he can see you? I put Ginger's crate on the floor next to my bed. When she cried I just put my hand down next to her cage and that seemed to reassure her. After a few days we were fine all night (well, until 4:30 a.m. ).

    Thanks!

Hi, thanks for your kind comments. Yes, last night was much better. My dad is hard of hearing, so it's never been an issue with him, lol.

Henry is settling better every day. I love the little rascal and so does Bodea.

    Thanks.
Another rough night last night, but I guess it's just the ups and downs of the beginning.

He's a pretty good little guy, and melts my heart. A little dream today had him "oofing" in his sleep. So precious.

Yes, it will get better. Just like Sunny, Boomer has a lot of excess energy at night, too. Just like little kids who don't want to go to bed, puppies fight having to settle down, too. Just too much to do and see and chew. We have found that if we pull a towel or something over the front of Boomer's crate, he settles down pretty quickly because he can't see out. Believe us all, though, when we say, it will get better. By the way, my childhood dog was a standard dachshund named Fritz. He was quite the hunter, and he loved his yard!

Oh, what a doll baby. I'd be tempted to never put him down.
Thanks for the picture of your babies.
