I'm not surprised to be writing this, I certainly am not happy about it but I knew that Speedy's time was coming. It was like he became old really quickly, but then again I had no idea of his age. His fur was thinning, he slept more, got some crusty gunk in his eyes, ate more, was a little more moody, you know old age. My parents found him dead when they came home during our camping trip to check on the animals.
Despite his failing life he still came out to eat, to groom himself, for a little exercise and of course for treats! He was a clever little guy that I got from my neighbour when her son got bored of him. Actually my sister had to pay her son $6 to get him but he needed a better home. He had lived in a cage smaller then a single habitrail, on cedar shavings, water rarely changed and on dollar store seed mix. We kept his old name for whatever reason but it certainly suited him. Speedy was fast in his youth. A speed usually only young syrians can accomplish. For a while he was pretty skittish and nervous, not that he could be blamed after living with a trouble making kid. Later he decided humans were ok so long as they came with treats.
Speedy was a good hamster and I'm glad that I was able to give him the home that he deserved.
Rest In peace little Speedy.
