When I first moved to Chicago and brought the cats down, I would occassionally go back to Wisconsin for a visit, but I would leave the cats home. At first Peanut wouldn't mind, but then I moved to a different apartment and she started "expressing her opinion" more often when I was gone. She would only do it either in the bathroom on a throw rug, or in the hallway on a throw rug, so I was never too concerned about it. Then I moved in with Terry, and there is white carpet everywhere!
I was worried because I knew her habits, so we got in the habit of locking them in the basement when we were going to be gone for a few days. Of course she started "expressing her opinion" on the basement floor, but it was no big deal - and thank goodness Terry didn't seem to mind. However, now she very seldom poops in the litter box.
Every morning I clean the litter boxes (3 of them for 2 cats) and every morning there's a little pile on the basement floor somewhere. Every once-in-awhile she'll actually poop in the box, but I haven't been able to figure out why that day was different so I could continue doing whatever it is I did. It's gotten to the point where I don't even care anymore because all she gets is dry food, so the poop is just dry and hard and doesn't make a mess, and I suppose if she must poop on the floor, I'd much rather have it the basement floor rather than all the white carpeting upstairs. So now you all know my Princess's dirty little secret.
