    Cannidae Outsourcing to Diamond :(

I'm really unhappy about this, as are many others. I finally found Dasher a good food he loves, now this. I'm just not comfortable staying with Canidae now. I'm thinking of going with Bil Jac. Any other suggestions? I'd really prefer to be able to pick it up instead of ordering off the internet.

First of all, I see nothing wrong with Diamond. We fed it for years, and did fine. It's actually a pretty good food for a low price, if you are on a budget.

However, since the formula is changing, I can see the concern. But I'd still give it a chance, and see what happens.

But I also do not like Bil-Jac much. They use inferior quality ingredients, IMHO, and the fact that they use corn and soy in a lot if their formulations bothers me.

I do, however, like Fromm, if you can find it. The Four-Star line is the best, but not very cheap. Their regular stuff isn't too bad, either.

We are currently feeding American Natural Premium www.americannaturalpremium.com. It's actually a contract food by Fromm, and is a fantastic food, ant a VERY good price.

But I'd also look at Innova, Eagle Pack, California Natural, Solid Gold (though it is sold in Petco now, so time will tell what that does to the quality).

By the way, here is a good article that can help you look at the labels, and interpret what you read...

I agree; Diamond was the first food I ever fed my dogs and my only concern was that Charlie had THE SMELLIEST gas on that food... whoooo boy could he clear a HOUSE!

Some of Diamond's foods aren't that great, but some of their formulas are really very good (in my opinion).

The only concern of mine that I may have is the change in formula and how it will affect my dog's tummys, etc. I will look into this further however and see HOW they are changing the formula and maybe look into feeding other alternative foods. But until then, it doesn't alarm me at all.

Also, solely in my opinion of course, Diamond is better than Bil Jac.

Thanks for the heads-up. Wallace is being boarded right now with a place that feeds canidae. I'll have to tell them that bit of info. It would be very shady if they weren't told this since they have a business relationship with the company. I'm sure they will drop the food since its been outsourced.

I've heard about Canidae switching the formula. REALLY sucks. =(

Are you worried about Diamond because of the whole aflatoxin scare? I don't blame you, but, I've read that Diamond is getting their stuff together and being very careful about testing the foods they produce. I feed Taste of the Wild for kibble meals, which is also made by Diamond, with no problems! It's an awesome food.

If you simply cannot stand foods produced by Diamond... I don't recommend BilJac. One word: corn! Yuck. I really like Natural Balance, for it's quality, and the price. It's probably around the same price as BilJac, but with way better ingredients IMHO.

I currently feed Canidae and Diamond... Diamond Naturals Chicken and Rice is not a bad food... no corn, wheat, soy or by-products..

For now we'll see what the change in ingredients with Canidae does with my dogs... currently I'm not to worried about it.. but my dogs don't have real sensitive stomachs either..

I would feed Diamond well before I'd consider bil-jac.... I think its horrible food. You can get a bag of Diamond Naturals for about $25 for a 40lb bag at tractor supply company here in my town.... many of the other diamond forumulas I wouldn't feed (diamond maintance, diamond premium adult, diamond hi-energy..etc..etc.) but ingredients.. but the Diamond Naturals line isn't bad..
If you're gonna breed Collies, don't you forget to breed in the brains and common sense. Without that you won't have a Collie, you'll have just another dog.

Do you have a local source for Innova? That's what I feed Jasper, and it's rather hard to come by but worth an extra trip IMO.

    Thank you Wolf_Q!

Read a couple of topics about this at other forums and have decided that I'm going to keep feeding this food since I'm assuming I've already bought a bag of the "new" formula (I had noticed that our bags now are like 35 or 37lbs instead of the 40lbs I've bought in the past), but didn't think anything about looking at ingredients, I'd just thought they'd changed the packaging but kept the price the same. Anyway, my dogs seem to be doing fine IF this is the new formula, otherwise I really can't afford anything else. This is already pushing it as it is... my hubby stands behind my decisions in what foods to feed the dogs but with me in school and not working and hubby working with his parents, our income is 1/4 of what it was six months ago, and with gas prices lately, the 60 mile round-trip to school daily is really hurting us financially... so I can't really afford to switch to something "better", I can't afford to switch to a 30lb bag of food for $60 (yeah, I've done some pricing on other brands).

So does anyone know of any foods in the Canidae price range IF I felt I needed to switch?? I'm currently paying like ~$40 for a 35lb bag of food now, give or take.

EDIT: Considered Innova, but again it's kind of expensive and I read they are manufactured by Menu Foods, which is a no-go for me. If anyone can disprove this please do as I would like to get this as an alternative if I can find it at a decent price in my area.

EDIT: Ah nevermind, called around a few places, Innova is on average $53.79 for a 33lb bag... nooo thank you, I'll stick to my $35-$40 bag of Canidae ><

It was the scare situation that concerned me. I went to Petsmart and I'm trying Blue Buffalo. It seems to be a really good food. Deboned chicken is the first ingredient and it's 25% protein. I'm mixing it slowly with the Canidae. I just didn't feel comfortable with Diamond and the fact that they're changing ingredients. I'm glad there will be a Petsmart near me soon because that is a long drive for a bag of food and the shipping was way too high.

Does anyone know approximately WHEN they changed the formula and started shipping it to retailers??? I'm starting to wonder whether my dog's excessive shedding this year compared to the last three years has anything to do with the change in formula, but unless it was a couple months ago it may not be it. Plus I'm not even sure if I have a bag of the "new" formula or not ><

I think the change is just now starting...

We still have about 13 bags of Canidea from our last order that was delivered less than a month ago (we get it in bulk from a dealer rather than a pet supply store -- its MUCH cheaper -- but we usually have to get 30 or so bags at a time -- getting from a dealer plus being on the breeder program it ends up to be roughly $28/bag after our free bags are added)... but anyway I checked the bags tonight when I was feeding dogs.. and these bags I have are still of the old formula...
