Any suggestions?

I am not exactly sure how to go about doing this, so I have come to ask for help. :]

I have been wanting to make something in memory of my dad to place at his stone. I was thinking about something along the lines of a painted picture(with text) on a flat surface. One question, would a smooth rock or a slab of wood be better for this? I was thinking rock, since it might hold up longer.
The second question is what kind of paint to use? I can probably get my hands on just about anything that would be best. I want to make sure it will hold up against the elements, that is my main concern.

Did her ever work with saws? Have you seen those pictures painted on saw blades? A rock would be nice if you could find a nice flat one.

You could probably use acrylic paints and then buy a finishing spray that most art stores sell that would create a seal over it and protect it from the elements. I think there is one available that has UV protection in the spray as well. You might want to try and paint it on a slab of rock though because it might stand the test of time longer than a piece of wood.

I had some finishing spray laying around here somewhere not that long ago. I forgot all about it. And I have a ton of acrylics scattered around. Gosh, this seems like it is going to be easier than I thought! Pfft, I seem to over-think things in the first place, anyway.

Actually, he did so allot. He grew up on a farm, plus he was good at building just about anything. That is a great idea! I will probably play around with that and painting on the rock to see which one ends up better. Thanks!
Hmm.. I was thinking, though, would it be more susceptible to rusting?

I would assume that most saw blades are made of a material that does not rust.
(Carbide... etc)
