Calgary firefighters are now trained, and better equipped, for animal emergencies.

Crews now have access to oxygen masks designed specifically for cats and dogs.

Firefighters have also been trained in pet CPR and oxygen delivery. “They are so similar [to human delivery] that they really don’t have to learn anything new,” says veterinarian Dr. Danny Joffe. “Compressions and breathes, per minute, they are the same in dogs as they are in people.”

CPR and oxygen could help save a pet’s life if they have suffered smoke inhalation or carbon monoxide poisoning.

“Dogs are part of the family, and humans are still our priority, but pets are family members too,” says firefighter Paul Aziz when asked why the Calgary Fire Department would invest in the equipment.

All fire trucks, and rescue boats, are now equipped with pet oxygen maskers, animal crates and leashes.

Thats' awesome!!! Hopefully more areas adopt this than just Calgary.

And aww they're doing CPR on an Aussie in that pic, I think. Looks like a merle anyway, really hard to tell because it's so small.

How wonderful! I wonder if they do that here in the states.

This brings tears of joy to my eyes. It's wonderful!!
And I too noticed that it looks like an Aussie in the picture and it made my heart jump a little. But the article had great news so it's all good!
Our goal in life should be - to be as good a person as our dog thinks we are.

Thank you for the siggy, Michelle!

My fiance told me that a beagle was hit by a car in front of my house, and the responder tried to do rescue breathing, so I know it is done here by some people.
