I'm not surprised people mostly drank soda - Methodist churches are traditionally "dry!" Still, though, it's in good church tradition to go where the people are. The Apostles didn't just hunker down in one spot, but travelled about!

I think they may already have this.
Years ago, Bobcat and I attended a potluck at the Anglican church in Exuma, Bahamas. Can't remember what dish we brought (there definitely wasn't enough to go around), but most of the other guests chose to bring wine and hard liquor.

We still joke that the invite should have read "Bring your own bottle".

    Really, this is unusual????

For years, I attended Cowboy Church in a bar in Calgary! In my younger, wilder days, it might have been because I hadn't made it home from Saturday night in the same bar! I'd bet they still have cowboy church in the Ranchman's.

When I was involved in rodeos, there was almost always a sunday service in the beer garden tent!

I don't really have a problem with this.

Jesus preached to prositutes, the homeless and beggars. Jesus drank wine.
"We give dogs the time we can spare, the space we can spare and the love we can spare. And in return, dogs give us their all. It's the best deal man has ever made" - M. Facklam

"We are raised to honor all the wrong explorers and discoverers - thieves planting flags, murderers carrying crosses. Let us at last praise the colonizers of dreams."- P.S. Beagle

"All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost. From the ashes a fire shall be woken, A light from the shadows shall spring; Renewed shall be blade that was broken, The crownless again shall be king." - J.R.R. Tolkien
