    Might be getting some Ratties!

I found someone who has a litter of rat babies. They actually live close to me, too! They are probably around eight or so weeks old now.

They have one agouti w/ white, one blue agouti w/ white, one white (no thanks), and two black w/ white.

Although I was hoping to obtain two once my hammies are no longer around, this is a perfect oppurtunity for me (so I won't have to buy from Petsmart, as the feed store that I'd love to buy from doesn't carry rats). I'm going to talk it over with my parents and I'll let you know the verdict!

Here are pictures of the Ratties (I love this first little guy.):

Huh. The pictures are showing up for me. lol I guess I'm special. I'll upload them onto my photobucket and post them again.

All of the rat pups are girls, which is okay. I was hoping for two boys, but two girls would be fine.

Still haven't asked my mom yet. lol If she's in a good mood tonight I will.

I like white rats, I just like colored ones more. White/albino animals just don't appeal to me, whether they be a rat, a ferret, a dog, a bunny....I LOVE white cats though. Go figure. My favorite coloring of all time is probably the "pinto" markings (like on Akitas, horses, etc.). So I like white mixed in with some color. lol

Here are the pictures of the pups:
Blue Agouti w/ white (my favorite):

    The Parents:

I can't decide which I like better - the Agouti or one of the black hooded ones. I guess I'll figure that out if/when I pick them up and go by temperment, not looks.

Oh, I know it. And actually, I never really thought to think about how I don't like the white color in a lot of animals. Huh. LOL

I'll be sure to keep you all updated! Wish me luck! lol

Most likely no ratties. I talked to my mom about it yesterday and she was completey fine with it until I told her they were two rats.....after that the only word she said was "No" and "Infineity times Infineity no". Drats. And when asked to explain her answer, she said, "They have long pointy noses and long naked tails. No."

But, I'm not one to give up without a fight (that is how I've come to own two ferrets, one of the hamsters, my puppy, and my bird), so I'm going to try again once more.

Anybody have any tips on convincing a mother that rats look like Gerbils, only they are bigger and don't have a fuzzy tail? Or maybe I could tell her they are something else (like the latin name for Fancy Rat or something). Then she'd be fine....

Maybe take her to a petstore and let her hold a rat. Thats how I made my mom like them. I forced her to hold one at a pet store. lol

I was going to suggest letting her meet a rattie, aswell. :]

Another thing that might help is if you point out that she doesn't have to even see the rats if you keep them in your room. Thats what I told my mum, and it helped to get her to give in. Now she just pretends like they don't exist.

    Good luck!

My mum was the same at first, She hated them wouldn't go near them or touch them at all..

I catch her quite a bit talking to them when shes upstairs, She will also be the first one to grab ronnie when hes out of the cage. She totally changed her mind about them and she rants on to everyone who thinks they are vermin.

She puts her hands in the cage and lets dudley give her kisses so it can happen. I found it helped getting babies, She was freaked out by the red eyes but shes got over that and will more that willingly snatch ronnie from me for a cuddle..

Cant you sort out a trial for a week? see if you can convert her, Find out why she doesn't like them, Rats often get looked upon as dirty flea ridden creatures, You got to convince her that the rats are very very clean animals, Both my boys are litter trained and wont go anywhere else.

I think Ronnie has a cleaning problem, Hes too clean his cage is spotless and he never has anything lying

I'm going to see if we can have a test drive. I'll have her come with me to the breeders and if she can't stand them like, we'll walk away without any Ratties. I think being able to talk to Rattie owners and seeing the baby rats will help change her mind.
Funny thing is, she let my brother have a Gerbil, and Gerbils are "Desert Rats". They actually look like miniature rats too, only much more spastic and with a fuzzy tail.

And then I showed her the runner up choice for me, the STO, and she just about had a heart attack. She their looks even less so than the ratties I showed her pictures of. LOL
