Duke has done a very bad thing, and I am unsure what I should do about it! Duke today Killed my Cat Loki, here is the Thread http://petoftheday.com/talk/showthread.php?t=130302

why would he do something like this, after living with cats since the age of 4 months old???

Should I be scared for My other cat??

what would you do???

I am having a very hard time looking at my dog right now, I am just so upset!!

Very sorry to hear about your kitty.

I'm not sure what sort of advice you're looking for. I would most definitely keep Duke and the other kitty seperated permanently.

Don't upset at Duke - he was just acting on instinct. I'm sure he doesn't understand what he did. He still loves you.

Definitely keep him and the other animals separated to be safe for now. That's a prey drive in action, and I am not sure what can be done to counteract it.

That is so unreal tho, especially after almost growing up with each other.

I would call a trainer or someone as soon as you can but make sure to keep them seperated until. He is a hunting dog if im correct so his prey drive is very high, im sure he didnt try to hurt the kitty but saw something running and attacked it by the time he was done it was prolly already to late for him to understand it was his friend. Im sure a trainer could help you guys out or atleast hope so... Sorry about your loss it mist be very hard to look at duke and not cry right now as well.

Oh no. I didn't expect to read this. Your Loki always reminded me of what my RB Sake looked like.

It definately sounds like his prey insticts just kicked in. Its a risk everyone, including me, takes with owning dogs & cats. The only advise I can offer is to keep Mocha & Duke permanently seperated. I'm not saying Duke would definately attack Mocha, but I don't want you and your family to have to go through another heartbreak.

Looking at this from a simple perspective... inside cat vs. outside cat is a very different thing weather they know the cat or not. As other have said, he was just acting on instinct. Don't judge him too harshly.

If you plan on taking him outside, try and make sure your other kitty is INSIDE.

King was good with cats inside, but outside cats were still fair game to him. (And this is a dog who loved everything under the sun and refused to kill... almost everything. I think he would have only chased the outside cats, but i never gave him the chance for me to find out.)

I'm so sorry for your loss. I've been in the exact same place. I just don't know which dog actually killed Dominique, who they had lived with for over five years.

Duke was acting on instinct. He is not aggressive, he is not mean, he's not a bad dog. He's just a dog doing what dogs do. He had no idea he was about to break your heart. He reacted to prey, as dogs have done for 1000s of years.

I would never let him near a cat again, especially outside. My dogs have learned the difference between inside cats and outdoor cats. An outdoor cat around here is a dead cat, doesn't matter who's cat it is, if they knew each other, if they were buddies...a cat outside is dead. Inside the cats are safe, but well supervised with the dogs. I don't allow any interaction. Dogs are kicked outside for extended staring at a cat. They are not allowed to play together, there is absolutely no chasing ever. If the dogs want to be in the house, they have to respect that it is the cats' territory.

I am so sorry! As everyone else was saying, Duke was only acting on instinct and you have to keep Duke and your other kitty apart. Bring one outside and the other stays inside. Hope this helps! I'm am really, really sorry about Loki. He was a beautiful cat...

OMG, how horrible for all of you. Duke didn't mean to do something awful, instinct just took over. I don't know what sparks prey drive, but I know my husky has plenty of it. Star grew up with ChowChow,my RB kitty, and never raised a paw to him. Rosie, my other dog at the time, was scared to death of the cat. But when we moved, they were in the kennel outside and Chow happened to walk through one night. They both launched off after him. They were so fast, I was just dumbfounded. Fortunately I was close enough to save him, but I couldn't believe how they acted. I never let him outside in the same area as them again. Now, they were all inside together again, and ChowChow was extremely cautious, but they never bothered him inside.

I don't believe you can train prey-drive out of a dog, it's hard-wired into their genes. All we can do is be aware and do what we must to keep everyone safe.

I am so sorry about your kitty boy, I hope your son can understand it wasn't something Duke had much control over either. It just happened.

You can't hold this against Duke - he was just a dog being a dog but I know how you feel having had to rescue a kitty from the jaws of my two not so long ago.

I make sure that my Brody is kept away from Tobey and Archie just to be on the safe side

It is very sad that this happened with your cat. but it is also very
unfair to put the "blame" on the dog for acting according to his nature.
Yes, they are our pets, but they are animals & will act according to their
natures. My dogs get along very well with my 5 indoor cats, but if one of
the cats would venture outside (especially if the cat were to run across
the yard) the dogs would chase & try to catch that cat. It would
break my heart to lose a cat like that, but I would be the one responsible,
not the dog or the cat.

My youngest cat, Joey, got out the back door once when I was letting the
dogs out into the backyard. cat saw the dogs approach & started to run.
Maggie had already reached Joey & tumbled him head over heels before I
could reach him. I did manage to get both dogs inside & then retrieved
Joey off the 6ft fence. No harm, no foul, that time, but it could very well
have ended entirely different.

Maggie - most of all, forgive yourself. Duke and Loki were such good buddies...there was NO way in a MILLION years you could have thought this would happen.

Losing trust in a beloved dog like Duke is hard.

Please do forgive yourself: 'It's not my fault; I didn't plan this, Duke didn't plan this. No way could I think this ever would have happened. It was a horrible and tragic accident.'

And even if you could have predicted it - there was nothing you could have done, it was too fast. HUGS!

I'm not sure what you should do about this, but for now, keep them seperated! Someone mentioned a dog trainer - that sounds like a good idea. Could it be that Duke is jealous of you cuddling with the cats?

Not all dogs get a chance though. One time when Fister was little, a dog was in lose in the yard, I don't remember what breed the dog was, but it was a fairly big one. Fister's mom had this dog cornered in no time. She was a tough lady!

Thanks everyone. Today has been rough, but I no longer blame Duke. After the shock of what happened yesteray wore off, I realized that he was just being a dog, and it was not his fault. I love my dog. Things happen, that are well beyond our control, and we just have to accept that. Duke is and will forever be my big goofy boy.
