Stray starving kitty, how does this happen?

I have been seeing this kitty around the neighborhood and he/she looks pretty lean. One night I came home and him and Potter were just laying near each other, I ran in the house and brought out some food and water and he ate like crazy, he was all bones. I am not sure if he is male or female, he doesn't let me near him but my daughter managed to pick him up for a few seconds.

I just don't understand, he doesn't seem feral and he doesn't look young, does someone just dump there cat? We never get stray cats here, in 11 years this is our first.

I am going to try to get him use to me so I can at least get him vacinnated and see if he/she is neutered/spayed.

Thank you for taking care of him. With a little patience, he will probably warm up.

He sounds like your typical abandoned cat. People say, I'm tired of the cat scratching the sofa or waking me at night or I'm having a baby and then kick the cat out the door. Sometimes they move and leave the cat.

In their wanderings, they're lucky if someone like you gives them food so they can live. To protect themselves, they become shy of strangers.

Around here, there are cat rescue groups that will take the cat in, resocialize, and then adopt out.

I don't know if you live in a major metro area, but if you do, there could be a group that would help you.

If not, getting him/her neutered or spayed is so important. Otherwise, you'll end up with kittens to feed, too!

He was lead to your house by a higher power where he could get the help and love he needs. Feed him and love him and he will warm up to you and spend the rest of his life showing you his grattitude.

Yes, unfortunately, people dump animals like refuse on a daily basis. But this kitty was led to you, I agree. They know where to go. How wonderful of you to care for him and get him the necessary vet care. After s/he's altered, s/he'll make a wonderful pet for you or someone else. Fatten him/her up and it probably won't difficult to place him/her.
    Blessings,
    Mary

Good for you! You are doing the right thing by ensuring he/she is fixed. That's how it all happens, irresponsible people do not spay or neuter then let them roam free. It doesn't take long before you can have a dozen cats not fixed. Sadly people dump and abandon all the time. I will be anxious to read your updates.
Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) is a full management plan in which stray and feral cats already living outdoors in cities, towns, and rural areas are humanely trapped, then evaluated, vaccinated, and sterilized by veterinarians. Kittens and tame cats are adopted into good homes. Healthy adult cats too wild to be adopted are returned to their familiar habitat under the lifelong care of volunteers

Sounds like you have a good plan. Give this kitty some time to warm up to you and hopefully you will be able to hold him/her. That's great if your daughter has been able to pick the kitty up. It does sound like someone left this poor sweet baby but at least you are taking care of the kitty. Thank you for doing that.

I know I am feeding some strays outside my apartment and the girl when she was close to 6 months got fixed and I released her because her brother was waiting outside my apartment the whole day while she was at the vets and he was 6 months at the time so I didn't want to separate them. She keeps coming back for food but she doesn't want anything to do with me. She just watches me give her food and when I go inside she comes creeping up the sidewalk and gets some food. As long as I can provide her with food and water then she will hopefully open up to me someday.

Thanks everyone. I do live near a big city but I know the shelter I volunteer at does euthanize what they deem as feral. I don't know about rescues. As long as he seems to get along with potter he should be fine around here.

As some of you know I inherited potter when my brother died and he goes outside and I am trying to break him of this habit.

Oh, that kitty is SO fortunate you are there!

Keep putting out food and water, twice per day, same place, morning and evening. That way at least he gets fed. And that will let you start getting near to him.

If their mother didn't teach the cat to hunt, it's out of luck! Thank goodness you were there to help the poor kitty!

I dont see Theresa, Chucky or Tubberoo the Young Black every day but I know that they are there as the food that I leave out is always gone.
    Always.
They LOVE the Fish Dinner from Petcetera which had little bits of fish in it and is so inviting.
