Sheesh, you lot aren't having much luck with dog foods lately are you?

I haven't really read up why they are being recalled, I just sort of noticed the thread titles. Being an ignorant Brit, I'm gunna ask now what has managed to get into these dog foods that is causing them to be recalled?

Melamine was apparently added to wheat gluten and rice protien by a company in China to make their product appear to be richer in content. It was then imported by an American company who in turn sold it to feed manufacturers for use in their product. It appears that it may have been originally imported in August of last year and the companies started using the product in September or October 2006. Presumably no one who examines imported goods, nor any of the companies involved were aware of the presence of the melamine, until cats started getting sick in December 2006 or January 2007(my assumption is that because they are the smallest of the animals involved they were the first to show signs of the contamination). It then took at least a month for everyone to figure out why so many pets were getting sick. During that time, more and more contaminated food was being manufactured and sold.

    Ah right.

I know the UK had a major food scare a couple of years ago because of a chili powder or something that had small amounts of sudan 1? in it, a red dye that has been linked to cancer. This stuff had been used in alsorts of food and loads had to be recalled and taken off the shelves. It only applied to human food though, not pet food.

This is the problem with importing so much stuff from abroad in countries that don't have such strict regulations on these things.

I think you are right. Of course there was a screaming about the company in China being aware of the dangers, but I am not sure what ever happened with that (if anything).

Well shoot, now I'm freaking out.

The food I feed my ferrets is 8in1 Ultra Blend Select Complete Nutrition Ferret Diet. The UPC code on this package is 2685100406...this is a 5 pound bag....I wonder if the recall only covers the specific 20 pound bags for some reason??? So worried.
