My schipperke has epilepsy, anyone else out there with an epileptic dog? He is doing really good bless his heart. The vet says medication is not necessary as his epilepsy is triggered by foods. (Additives, msg and so forth).

Mom of Rocky the wonder dog.
I have a friend who's dog had it for years. The dog was on Dilantin (sp?) for years. It had bad seizures and by taking the meds. it kept it somewhat under control. The dog was a golden retriever.
Hope this helps!

My Rose, an aussie x yellow lab mix has epilepsy. She's on phenobarbitol 60 mg 3x a day. Lately, she's been seizuring about once every ten days. I'm concerned and will be talking to the vet about an adjustment in the meds.
I'd really like to know how your vet isolated the cause of your dog's seizures to food additives. Do you use a particular natural brand of dog food? Or feed a raw diet? Any supplements or vitamins?
Joan
I am so sorry to hear that, god luck with finding proper food for your dog.
Jen,
Did the vet give you an idea of the kinds of foods to feed him? I hope it gets better for him.
I had a Dalmation (Jake) for 6 1/2 years that was epileptic. He was prescribed 2 Primidone pills a day. As his seizures increased in frequency & intensity, the prescription was upped. When he reached 5, his seizures were out of control & he was prescribed Potassium Bromide in liquid form. This kept things under control for the most part. He would have monthly cluster seizures---maybe 5 in one day but none for a month or more.
The Primidone can cause liver damage so Jake had blood work every year to test his liver enzyme level. It was always fine.
The important thing is to have a good vet. We lost our Jake 3 weeks ago to pancreatitis and I think our vet could have provided better care (or at least more compassion) in his last days.
Good luck. It's heartbreaking and scary.
My dog (mixed breed, now at the Raonbow Bridge) had epilepsy. I can't remember the name of the medication he got, but it kept the seizures away more or less. It was so scary to see him having those seizuresI cried my eyes out every time.
Now my dog has left us, not due to epilepsy, but other illness.
I hope you get to keep your dog, good luck with the food!
