New Animal Welfare Act!

The Animal Welfare Act is a new law that will provide much greater protection for animals.

The law comes into force on 28 March in Wales and on 6 April in England.

The Animal Welfare Act includes a new 'welfare offence' - which put simply means that the owner of a pet is legally obliged to care for their pet properly, by providing:


a proper diet, including fresh water
somewhere suitable to live
for any need to be housed with or apart from, other animals
the ability to express normal behaviour
protection from and treatment of, illness and injury.

It is important to remember that most pet owners will not need to change the way they care for their animals to comply with the new law - most people already provide for their pet's needs.

The law is not designed to catch people out - only to help protect animals that do not receive proper care.

I agree, this should be a "LAW" all over the world. At least it is a start.

the laws are tougher now in ca but animal cruelty/abuse is not a felony & the max jail time in county jail is 90 days & you end up doing 60 days with 30 days good behavor.its SHOULD be a felony with max 12 months in jail & probation restrictions with NO animal contact.in los angeles county a few months back 2 low life teens lit 2 lil dogs on fire while they were locked inside a dog carrier.i dont think they have caught the punks.a witness told the police it was 2 teens.
