    Frogs in My Pond

Last night about 9:00 when I was putting the dogs out, I heard a funny noise that seemed to come from my pond. It sounded kind of like some sort of bug you hear later in the summer - a loud almost whistling noise. So I took a flashlight out to investigate. And I found about 4 little frogs in my pond. I really don't understand the lifecycles of frogs. Different years I will buy tadpoles and then see little frogs later in the summer/ early fall. Other years I won't buy any but still find frogs in the pond (by the way, it is a small decorative pond -not a large swimming, fishing pond). So while I am not sure where they came from, here are some pictures I got of the frogs. And these weren't easy to get. Trying to hold a flashlight and take pictures holding the camera steady enough was not an easy thing. My husband is a couch potato so trying to get any help was not possible. But here is some of what I saw.

First off I have netting across the pond to keep leaves from getting into the bottom of the pond -so this frog is climbing on some of that netting

    A different frog

If you look at the frog's throat you will see it blown up like a balloon. That is where the noise comes from

It was funny because they are all in the same pond which is about 4 foot by 6 foot and yet one starts and then the others respond. It is amazing how loud they are - you could hear them from in the house with the doors and windows closed.

This one was very close to where I was standing

    And one last picture

I am really looking forward to spring and summer. I love my flower gardens and my ponds!

How cute! All the spring peepers have come out of hibernation around here too. You really hear them when you get near the swamp.

It's supposed to snow though later this week so I hope they can find someplace warm to hunker down!

Our "Summer Concerts" began last week!
Opened the door Saturday night to let the DogMob out for their bedtime Outie ...
and the *NOISE* from the woods & pond was almost overpowering!

    *CHIRP* - *CROAK* - *WHISTLE* - *SQUWALK* - *SHRIEK* - *HOWL*

    OMG!
The Three Mutts down to the pond and began chasing *critters* ...
I could hear their progress along the pond bank ...
*splip* - *splop* - *splish* - *splash* as froggy after froggy sought the safety
of the pond as the Dog Herd approached. By the time the dogs had explored the pond,
the "critter talk" had died down to a soft whisper - all the Wildlife was busy
    *listening* for
    the Doggie Intruders.
