My aunt wants a dog what breed do you think she should get ?

Hey guys,

My aunt wants to get a dog, she is now home alone alot and wants the company. She has a poodle mix that is 15 years old and is starting to go down hill. She thought if she got a dog now it might also pick up the spirit of her poodle ???

She loves Hannah but thinks she is a one of a kind beagle, she doesn't think she would ever find another beagle like her ?? I don't really know what she means by that ...lol..

She is not a fan of moms shelties, the boston is a little to much dog something a little more mellow would be nice. Just a good companion the size doesn't matter.

She loves goldens and they are such sweet loving dogs I think a golden would be perfect what breeds do you think ???

I was going to suggest a Flat-Coated Retriever; they are absolutely beautiful and loyal, but they're too hyper. How about a Corgi?

Angie, I would just look around and see if you can find a pretty mellow dog for her. I also wouldn't get a puppy, they are a lot of work and it doesn't matter what breed it is, they are pretty hyper. I think a Beagle would be great, but it just depends on the individual dog.

PS Did you look at the picture of Sammy, our newest addition? We think he's Black and Tan Coonhound/Bloodhound mix. He's just too cute for words.

I would just check rescue group websites and find a description of a personality that might match her lifestyle. Then show her the dog's pic and see if she'd like to meet with it. I think there's so many breeds that would work, its just going to boil down to the individual dog's personality.

I would agree with what others have already said. Check rescue groups and shleters for a dog with the personality, not neccesarily one specific breed. Also, I think a puppy would be really rough on the poodle. A dog that is maybe 2-3, would be at the end of the puppy stage and its personality would be a little clearer.

How about a guide dog flunky? Most of these dogs are highly trained, just not perfect enough to be used to assist the disabled. They come in many breeds and sizes. You may want to check it out.

Rescue groups are also a great source. They know their animals and can help you find the dog that fits your lifestyle and personality.

I agree with the others: Do not get a puppy!

no she doesn't want a puppy, I have been keeping my eye open at the shelter for any dogs that come through. There is a male beagle there right now 4 years old house trained, mellow lovable sounds perfect. I'll have to get her out to meet him.

I don't know of any guide dog trainers around here, I'll have to look into that but thats a great idea.

I haven't seen pics of Sammy yet but he sounds adorable, I can't wait to see him.

Hey,
I would sugest a Schnouzer or maybe even a Golden Retriver if thats a breed she likes,but if she dosnt want a full bloode doggie i would sugest(yeh i no im spellin it wrong

)going to a shelter and looking there for a dog that would fit her life style. good luck!!

Hello

I am sure an older dog from a shelter would be the best. I think most shelter/rescue centres work the same way in the Canada and USA as the do here in the UK, they will try and fit dog to home and person as much as possible. Over here some also encourage current and new dog to meet first to see if they maybe will get on too.

Anyway, that is what I will do if I ever need to find a new furry kid!

.I think one fromthe shelter would be a nice addition to any family. We love our Chewy and thats where we got him. She shoudl also consider maybe a poodle? She already has a mix

she would rather rescue then buy from a breeder and I would not allow her to buy from the pet store ... lol. so we are keeping an eye on the shelter. Do you know that poodles are one of the hardest dogs to find in our shelters ?? I would have never guessed it but you don't often see a poodle in our shelter. I don't know the reason for it though ? Maybe everyone loves their poodles soooo much that a poodle never needs a home, wouldn't it be nice to be able to say that about all breeds.

She also LOVES chows a chow was her first dog but with all her grand kids she would feel better raising the chow from a puppy but she doesn't want a puppy so she has ruled out nother chow.

A Schnouzer (sp?) is a nice breed to, I never thought of that. They seem so loving and so loyal ??

Have you tried contacting rescue groups for the specific breeds you are interested in? Even though these dogs are not in the immediate danger that dogs in kill shelter's have to face, they are very much in need of good homes.

I'm sure their is a poodle rescue group somewhere.

There are sites (I can't remember them off hand) that allow you to pick multiple choice answers about dogs, and the computer tells you what pet you are most compatible with. It is really neat-o! I will try to find it and post the URL.
