Man beats puppy to death with bat *MAD*

02/21/07 -- FAYETTEVILLE) - Deputies charged a Cumberland County man with animal abuse Wednesday after he told them he used a baseball bat to kill a puppy he couldn't house-train.

Even as he was being arrested, Gerald Frank Belanger questioned the charge against him. Belanger said the four or 5-month-old puppy he beat to death was a stray, and he was tired of not being able to train the animal.

When asked why he used a baseball bat, he replied, "That's all I had in my hand. I ain't got no gun."

Neighbors called animal control. Belanger told them he killed the puppy with one blow to the head.

At first, animal abuse investigators said all they could do was issue Belanger a $100 civil citation.

"We can't prove anything -- a malicious attempt, or pain and suffering to the animal," said Charles Steinman, animal control. "The only person who actually saw anything is now refusing to involved. He doesn't want to write a statement of testify, and it basically ties our hands."

But after pressure from the sheriff's department to file a criminal charge and a review of state statutes, Animal Control Director Sue Nicholson said it is a felony case.

"Any accusation of animal cruelty or abuse we take very seriously," said Nicholson.

As Belanger was taken away in handcuffs Wednesday night, he admitted he may have made a mistake.

This guy says "I may have made a mistake". You think???
    You morons, LOCK HIM UP!
My local Animal Control was going to blow this off.. What does our tax money go too?

    May he rot in hell

I feel sorry for the pup but there are also many seals being bated in the head everyday so I don't feel anymore sorry for a puppy than a seal, humans don't make sence .. they'll freaking stop this guy but won't stop seal clubbing.

    Life sucks.

Oh that is so sad I can't believe what that poor puppy went through, at least he is in a better place now and not with that menace of a man. I say lock him up, if he would kill a helpless animal with a bat, he would kill a human with a bat.

I agree he should be locked up and never allowed to own an animal. But I also wish they would lock up all those that club those baby seals to death. Why is one not okay, yet the other is condoned with lousy excuses???

To me, the brutal beating and murder of ANY animal is wrong. Be it a dog/seal/cat/monkey....
May I just say, the puppy is domesticated. He could have done TONS of things instead of kill this puppy. Gave it to a friend, animal control. Dropped it at a vet. Any shelter. Put an ad in the paper. etc etc.
Again, May he rot in hell.

You know the sad thing? These people usually get off with a fine,I have seen it many times before.

But....If the shoe was on the other foot and somoene Beat him to death for harming that puppy.

We would get life in jail.

Which i think should happen in this case.

    Rest Well Little pup!
