    Just a question???

Just wondering, If you buy a dog from a breeder or pet store and they give you the pups papers does that mean the dog is alreayd registered or not? I never figured that out and never sent any of my papers in from any pure bred dog I have had, but I was just wondering if that means they are even registered yet or not. Im alittle confused with that....

first of all, I wouldn't ever buy a dog from a pet store. even if they DO have papers from the pet store, most dogs at the pet store come from a puppy mill or backyard breeders. I am not talking about petsmart or petco but just a plain pet store. and I would assume if you bought from a reptuable breeder, the dog would be registered. not that I would ever buy a dog from a pet store or a breeder, I would rather adopt.

If they give you the individual registration slip you need to fill it out and send it in to register your dog. Until you do that your dog is not registered individually, just the litter. If the pup is going to be neutered and strictly a pet there really isn't any advantage to sending in the registration.

I hate to say, but I don't think your dogs would be registered then. Normally you get a form the breeder fills out one section, and then you fill in your name, addess, and such, and get to make a nice little name for the dog as well. Then you send in the form with a check or money order and you get a little paper with the parents and such on it, and your name, and the dogs. At least that's how it worked through the AKC. I registered mine online though which was nice. The registration got here a lot faster.

We were given registration papers by both breeders we bought from. They "signed over" the dog, and left it up to us to send in the registration and have it changed legally over to our name. There is a small additional fee if you want a copy of the dog's registry. I think it's kind of cool - it's a family tree and lists colors, names, and titles & awards any of the dogs may hold.

A pet store would likely have only registered the litter, not the individual dog. Registration costs money and as such it is the breeder's responsibility to provide each individual registration - alot of breeders won't even let the owners have a choice in the registered name.
