What is your opinion on designer breeds?

What is your opinion on designer breeds? Please reply and tell what you voted, specify why that is your opinion and why you made that opinion.
I wouldn't say I hate them, but I am against how people are saying they're real breeds and they are registering them with kennel clubs and stuff... I just think that is wrong. And I HATE how they mix the two breed's names together like Poodle and Golden Retriever and Pug and Beagle....... sure all dogs came from mixed breeds but they didn't mix the names of the real breed's names together and breeds like Boxer and Great Dane are actually real!!!

I am against any sort of irresponsible breeding which would include both purebreds and mixes. I don't see a purpose for designer breeds though, especially when there are already tons of different breeds in the world. I'm sure somebody could find everything they want in an already created breed instead of making new ones. Before anyone says anything, I already know all breeds originally started out as mixes and could have been called 'designer breeds' back then. However, I believe that was totally different as back then, people were creating breeds to serve a certain purpose (be it hunting, herding, whatever). Nowadays people are creating them just because they are cute and a "good way to make a ton of money". I don't think designer breeds can be compared to todays purebreds.

I dont hate those poor dogs but.....

Designer breeds are simply mutts being bred and sold for hundreds if not thousands of dollars and that just turns my stomach. These same dogs are being killed daily in the shelters.

Totally against it for obvious reasons.

I find it funny - people are always looking for a good bargain - right?

So why do they seek out designer breeds - when they can go to a shelter or rescue and adopt a dog for 1/3 the price of a designer breed??

Until millions of dogs aren't dying in shelters nationwide - I don't feel more breeds should be made when there are already breeds that need desperate help that are being destroyed (my breed included) by PMs/BYBs.

But with that said, I wouldn't be against breeds that are being created to fill specific roles that other breeds couldn't fullfill (I'd love to hear what the goals are, what the job would be, and why a breed now couldn't fill that role, though). But there's no use for "Chugs" or "Maltipoos."

    I'm not anti-mutt, or anti-breeding, or anti-creating new breeds - I'm anti-idiot.
I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

Oh, I should have thought of that. I don't hate the dogs, if that's what you were asking, I hate the IDEA of the dogs.

I am against them. I hate how some owners make sucha big deal out of them, honestly their a mutt, not a rare breed. I have a cliet who was making such a big deal about her "havenese Snoodle" It gets on my nerves and their is so many designer breeds at work. Funny thing is that the breeds that they say they don't shed but they shed like any other breed.
Thanks so much Ashley for the siggy!

Mixed breeds are mixed breeds. If shelters can get more dogs into good homes by calling them "designer names" I am okay with it, but I am always against breeding two dogs just to make money, not for the betterment of the breed, or some other purpose, like having a great herding dog on your farm that other people want pups from, hoping for a good herder for their flock.

    They are mutts.
    Irresponsibly bred mutts.
Thats all there is to it.
    I'm against it.

I would have been surprised if the poll had gone any other way. To all of us it is appalling, but to the general public it is something else. Just today I saw an ad in my local paper for a new store called Puppies R Us. It listed a whole group of mixed breed dogs. The sad thing is they will probably do a great business and in a few months those dogs will be in shelters after their impulsive humans decide the dog was a passing whim and bought only for the cuteness factor.
