Help! My babies just ate a 2Lb bag of cat food

I know that cat food isn't good for dogs. I'm just not really sure why. Anyhow, My sister left a new 2Lb bag of cat food down and Thor and Sif ate the entire bag. I buy Nine lives cat food if that helps at all. All I found was a few bits left and some paper.(I think they even ate part of the bag.) Should I feed them as usual today or fast them?

My dogs would literally jump through hoops to get to the cat food and they have suceeded a couple of times. I dont know what kind and how many dogs you have so I dont know whether you should fast them or not. For dogs like mine if one or two ate the whole two lbs, yes I would fast for today. If all five of my dogs shared, yeah right, then I would give them dinner.

Cat food isn't good for dogs as a daily regime but I dont think eating it on ocassion is reason for alarm.

Cat food is high on taurine which they need for eye sight, but short of discomfort from eating so much, they should be fine. Skip dinner to clean out the guy and watch for signs of discomfort like panting, trying to go to the bathroom and not but they should be fine..

I think you should fast them for today because that is a really big bag for 2 dogs

kittykatsmoocher - perhaps you've never encountered hungry huskies! Two pounds isn't a whole lot for eating machines!

But I would agree with the advice to just watch and make sure they are drinking and eliminating normally. If anything, a light supper may be all that's required, and no extra snackies for today.

It's very rich, so I'll bet their tummies might be a little upset tonight. I'd recommend fasting them for the rest of today and making sure they have access to lots of fresh water. When Wilbur got into some cat food he had runny poop for a few days and went on a bland diet until he felt better but he was otherwise fine.

    Thank you Wolf_Q!

Okay I was thinking about this. I am assuming you feed a kibble to your dogs. A 8 oz cup is a half a pound, so a full pound would two cups. So 2 pounds would be 4 cups of food. I am pretty sure your huskies would be able to eat 4 cups ( especially the two of them) without too much distress. I would however, as I am sure you already skip dinner, and maybe only half a breakfast if that.
Cat food is higher in protein too, as richer as someone stated. Short of having gastric upset because of a " change in foods" and the higher in protein of the cat food, I would think they should be fine.
How are they today by the way??

I used to have a dog that thought he was a cat. When I called for the cat he came. He loved catfood so much. I finally had to feed the cats in a room with a gate in front of it to keep him out of the catfood!

I would just let them fast today, and watch them carefully. Dogs seem to love catfood for some reason. Maybe they want that fish flavor.

By the way, the catfood never did hurt my dog, but of course, I made him quit eating it before it did hurt him.

Thank You, kittycats_delight for my new siggy!!!

Thanks everyone! I went ahead and fasted them yesterday. Thor drank a ton today but had an upset tummy this morning so we only had some rice for breakfast. Sif, who is only six months old, she has the runs today(really bad). I think she is finally over it tonight. We are still working on the potty training so all mishaps today was on the WHITE carpet in the living room. Before anyone ask why I have white carpet it was here when I bought the house and is being ripped out next month. I think the both of them are doing well tonight for the most part.

huskylover- I moved into this house with rust colored carpet, and hated it. It showed not only hair, but dirt and lint as well. I have a darker beige- like a taupe, and love it. Most of my hair is white, so it doesnt show it, and studier than I thought in soil resistant. I do run the vac every day to clean reasons, and that keeps the dirt out of the carpet pile.
As far as cleaning a light run- I like "Simple Solutions" in concentrate forum or "woolite oxy deep". Both do great. Also imodium works on diareah, but you need to call your vet and ask for the dosage as I am not use to thinking that small. Also- since they ate cooked bones, blockage is still a consideration and only your vet can tell for sure..
